Auckland – Dan Carter doesn’t normally give too much away in the leadup to a Test, so it was interesting to hear the All Blacks playmaker practically paint a target on the back of his Springbok opposite this week.

DURING last year’s Currie Cup, Sharks veteran Stefan Terblanche took over the leadership reins from the injured Johann Muller and led a largely new-look team to 12 wins out of 12 as captain and a top-of-the-table finish in the pool stages.
Compliments to the Daily News for the article.
The All Blacks and Springboks played each other for the first time in 1921. In the second test of that series the two teams met –for what was the first ever test on Eden Park- on what has now become a fortress for New Zealand rugby. The All Blacks have won 20 straight test matches at the ground, with their last non-victory being an 18-18 draw with Francois Pienaar’s Springboks in 1994 (thanks to six Shane Howarth penalty goals). Reading on some web sites and in the press, there seems to be some confusion regarding the possible move of the Test on 21 August 2010 between the Springboks and All Blacks, from Coca-Cola Park (Ellis Park) to the National Stadium (Soccer City).
Some pundits believe the move is a forced move under presssure from SARU, forcing the GLRU (Gauteng Lions Rugby Union) to move the game in an attempt to recover the outstanding British and Irish Lions debt owing by the GLRU to SARU, some believe it is a new and exciting initiative by the GLRU to revive rugby in their region and a possible pre-curser to moving the home base of the GLRU permanently to the National Stadium.
Whatever the case, here is an insight from someone high up in the Club Scene in the GLRU structures.

Graham Henry loved the analogy. That the All Blacks are no longer the hunted but the hunter. That rugby’s international landscape has changed. The Springboks roll into Auckland today as the beast with the target on its back.

The Boks have been a persistent problem for All Blacks captain McCaw, touted as the world’s best No7.
“I’m certain all rugby fans would send Brendan Cannon their support and best wishes at such a difficult time. An terrible accident, exactly the same as that which Phil Kearns experienced five years ago” – Old Griqua
Western Province and the Blue Bulls produced the least impressive performance of the big guns as the teams finished off their pre-season Currie Cup build-up with a series of friendly matches at the weekend.
ONE of the many hallmarks of Richie McCaw’s All Blacks captaincy has been an aversion to saying anything even mildly contentious.
Yesterday, McCaw the diplomat, holding fort at Camp All Black, stayed to script. He gave the Springboks, who arrive in Auckland tonight, not the smallest crumb to feed off, with one tiny but significant exception.
