Gravy TrainToday we received an open letter to Jurie Roux, SARU CEO, lamenting the fact that the design and production of the nationally important new Springbok Museum in Cape Town was awarded to a UK (English) design company.

A number of years ago I learnt and realised first hand how apathetic South Africans are when it comes to doing something for this sport we love so much, rugby in South Africa. I learnt that SARU can do anything they want, there will be a few muted murmers and a lot of around the braai chatter about how these fools run OUR game, but nobody does anything about it and eventually these fools at SARU just laugh at us… seeing us all as mere consumers of the game, not de facto stakeholders in the game.

Suffice to say that I am deeply concerned about how SARU runs rugby in South Africa and for South African interests.

Vodacom CupLosing will not be an option when the four Vodacom Cup quarter-finals take place across the country this weekend. Durban, Cape Town, Nelspruit and Pretoria will host the top eight teams on Friday and Saturday in a weekend where second best will no longer be good enough.

Exactly the same eight teams that played in the quarter-finals in 2012, are back again this year. Even their positions from last year are almost the same. The Vodacom Blue Bulls “replace” GWK Griquas as hosts, while the Sharks XV, Steval Pumas and DHL Western Province will all host a quarter-final for the second successive year.

Page 51 of the annual report reveals that SARU’s after-tax profit plunged 87% to R2.347m in the year ended December 31 2012, down from R18.554m the year before.

The squad will be captained by Sam Warburton who was introduced to the media, gathered in London for the announcement, by head coach Warren Gatland.

Rob ForemanThe Hurricanes have called up Manawatu hooker Rob Foreman after an injuries to Motu Matu’u and Dane Coles.

The Hurricanes only have Ash Dixon as a recognised hooker available but prop Reggie Goodes able to cover the position as back-up.

Coles has a fractured eye socket and Matu’u fractured his forearm playing against the Stormers on the weekend.

Jonathan Humphreys, the former Welsh hooker and captain, will join the Scotland management ahead of the quadrangular tournament with Samoa, South Africa and Italy in June. He will be on a two year contract.
