To my mind, rugby is; first up, a team sport. Therefore, the sum of the parts will always trump comparative individual skill and/or reputation. That’s what I propose we witnessed on saturday evening. The team dynamic of the Stormers was way superior to that of the Sharks, most especially evident in the second half. Sure, one could point to the front row dominance of the Stormers having a domino effect on the rest of the team but I’d prefer to recall the team as a whole outperforming the Sharks on the day. Nothing to do with how many Boks were in either side and questions asked of their skill-set. One team outplayed another. Simple as that.

Hi Tassies, spot on with your assessment there. Think the Stormers team had played more together recently than the Sharks, were there not quite a few Sharks guys jetted in from Japan straight into the starting line up, especially in crucial positions, eg. the centres with Lambie all of a sudden having to get used to having Steyn and an out of position JP next to him? The team ethos also extends to the management/coaching part of it, the Stormers would have been more familiar with their coaches and how they were to play the game than the Sharks.

Bangladesh 3/1, caught at 3rd slip – shades of proper cricket?

  • 303

followed by a dropped catch at 3rd slip in 2nd over

  • 304

    8/2, caught at 1st slip

    @ Tassies:
Completely agree with you, its hard to stand out when your team does not play well.

And when your team plays well its another scenario… Look at jdj he barely gets the ball and on saturday he knocked it twice when he could have been under the poles. But for some reason he just isnt as bad as our other centers.

And thats just my opinion. I find it scary when our “best” 13 is only being judged on currie cup form. We are falling behind the kiwis and aussies.

Correction. We are falling FURTHER behind the kiwis and aussies.

True Macro, but it’s also not fair to the player if the ONLY platform he plays is CC or SR.
It’s then impossible to judge the player against the incumbent Bok player if he isn’t given a fair chance against international players in the test arena.
Let’s use just one example….Kolbe played very well in the CC, and is earning his place in the Stormers in SR.
Willie is also having a good SR tournament so far, but I don’t think he is totally overshadowing Kolbe.
The odds that Kolbe will get a Bok call up so that we can compare apples with apples is zero.
It’s not always the players fault that he is only able to showcase what he can do in the only competition/s he is able to play in.

    @ nortie:
Yep you can only judge a player on what he does, I agree, no one knows how Kolbe will fare at International level, while Willie was one of the 5 players of the year (before europe).

I am referring specifically to 13, a problem area for us over the last few years, is it because all our 12’s are “crash-ball” centers? I just think it is worrisome that we can almost all agree that JDJ is the “best” option available, but is that only because the other contenders are pretenders? JDJ has honestly done very little this year, even on Saturday he had 2 chances to run all the way through and he lost the ball, so even he is performing at a lower standard than he did last year during SR where he was honestly playing his best rugby.

On Saturday JDJ got the ball 3 times, didn’t pass and he made 2 tackles… he missed 3…

but we would all probably agree he is the form center 😆

Fair enough….but would you agree that even with those stats he was better than JPP, who was as close to invisible as Pierre Spies in a camo Bulls jersey?

Currently, as a combination, I believe De Allende and JdJ is the best we have after 4 rounds.

Doesn’t mean they must be the Bok pairing, but it’s worth taking note of IMO.

    311 @ nortie:
Forgot to add that JPP is in HM’s plans as a 13, so between those two I would rather opt for De Jongh

  • 313

    @ nortie:
my point is, if that is the best we have, then we are very far behind.

De allende is carrying that combination completely at this stage, because he is doing the crash ball thing better than anyone else.

  • 314

Must say, I never thought the Stormers would be 4 out of 4 about two months ago.

What is happening at the Sharks?

Does HeavensGame still comment on here?

  • 315

De Allende is very strong in contact, but what he does well – as opposed to traditional “crashball” centres – is that he seems to manage to keep the ball alive in contact, that is, he doesn’t go to ground and if he does, he manages to offload.
