Flanker Deon Stegmann will lead the Vodacom Blue Bulls on Saturday when they take on Saracens in a friendly match outside London. The Blue Bulls named their final travelling squad on Wednesday, just before departure to England.
Regular captain Pierre Spies will only play off the bench in his return to first class rugby after more than 12 months on the sidelines; hence the decision to employ Stegmann’s proven leadership skills. The former Springbok flanker captained the Vodacom Blue Bulls with great success in the ABSA Currie Cup competition in the past.
Another former captain, Victor Matfield, will travel to London as part of the coaching team and not as a player and will not be in action over the weekend.
A number of Matfield’s Springbok team members who travelled to Europe in November will start the match, but flyhalf Handré Pollard will only be used of the bench as the playmaker has just recovered from a foot injury.
Jan Serfontein and Francois Hougaard will start, as well as Trevor Nyakane, who missed the season-opening friendly against the Cheetahs last weekend due to a back spasm.
“We are keen for a competitive outing that will test our combinations selected for this match,” Vodacom Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said. “We will be looking to give a number of subs some game time, but we’ll also be aware that momentum will be important during the match.”
Vodacom Blue Bulls team: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Jamba Ulengo, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Hanro Liebenberg, 7 Lappies Labuschagne, 6 Deon Stegmann (Captain), 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Jacques du Plessis, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Trevor Nyakane
Replacements: 16 Jaco Visagie, 17 Morné Mellett, 18 Marcel van der Merwe, 19 Dayan van der Westhuizen, 20 RG Snyman, 21 Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, 22 Roelof Smith, 23 Pierre Spies, 24 Piet van Zyl, 25 Rudy Paige, 26 Handré Pollard, 27 William Small-Smith, 28 Duncan Matthews, 29 Jesse Kriel.
Kick-Off is at 15:15 BST & GMT (17:15 SA Time and the match is broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 1.
The Vodacom Blue Bulls will also play with the J9 Foundation’s logo on their sleeve to create awareness for MND. The foundation, named after former Vodacom Bulls captain, Joost van der Westhuizen, is doing great work to create awareness for Motor Neuron Disease.
Claire Kaye-Grobler, from the J9 foundation: “Events like the up coming friendly game between Saracens and the Vodacom Blue Bulls are absolutely crucial in the global fight against MND, this disease is an otherwise forgotten about disease with no cure and no cause, it therefore discriminates against no one and we thus need people to stand up now and push for researchers to find a cure or cause and this will only happen with awareness.”
Kelly Brown will lead a powerful Saracens team against the Blue Bulls in the Sanlam Challenge at Allianz Park on Saturday 31 January.
“We’re expecting a massive challenge from a team including 15 Springboks,” said the former Scotland captain, “but we are fielding our strongest available side and we’ll be ready.”
Jackson Wray, 24, will make his 100th appearance for the club, becoming the fourth member of the golden ‘Class of 2008’ to reach that landmark, combining with Ernst Joubert and Brown in a strong back row.
Neil de Kock, a former Springbok himself, will partner Charlie Hodgson at halfback, as Saracens seek to follow recent wins over The Sharks and Western Province and to complete a notable treble over the three strongest provincial teams in South Africa.
Maintaining the club policy of giving opportunities to talented players from the Saracens global network, Valentin Poparlan, of Timisoara Saracens and Romania, is included.
The Sanlam Challenge will be broadcast live in the UK and in South Africa, with an estimated television audience of 450 000.
Saracens: 15 Ben Ransom, 14 Jack Wilson, 13 Tim Streather, 12 Chris Wyles, 11 David Strettle, 10 Charlie Hodgson, 9 Neil de Kock, 8 Ernst Joubert, 7 Kelly Brown (Captain), 6 Jackson Wray, 5 Valentin Poparlan, 4 Jim Hamilton, 3 Petrus du Plessis, 2 Brett Sharman, 1 Richard Barrington

Jurgen Visser, JJ Engelbrecht, Werner Kruger…
Damn, looks like we will see the same od, same old in 2015 again!
Saracens side a mix of 1st team and 2nd team players… should be a tough bunch!
More like a mixed 1st, 2nd-5th string team. @ grootblousmile:

What did you expect?
Innovative coaching?
New ideas?
With dumbass Ludeke there?
Expect more of the same skop-and-jaag this year
We might win a few at Loftus when the visiting sides gets so bored of up and unders that they don’t care anymore
When we lose Ludeke will say “We’re in a building phase”

It’s a cold dull overcast day here in London near the Allianz. Ground is wet but doesn’t look like it has been snowing here or if it did it was probably more sleety as no snow lying anyway unlike were we left from this morning.
15 @ Bullscot:Will put up the Saracens / Blue Bulls Game thread now… then you continue with your comments about the conditions and your experience today, THERE, on the game thread!
Only recognize two or three names in the Saracens side….because they are Saffas.
Is this their C or D team?
