Two former Welsh internationals have been drafted into the Namibian backroom staff as support on their Northern Hemisphere tour.

Former Welsh captain Phil Davies has been appointed as a technical advisor with Wayne Proctor being brought in as a strength and condition consultant.

The pair recently visited Windhoek where they assisted Namibia in their preparations for the international against Germany.

Davies and Proctor joined the team in Abergele, Wales on Monday and have been working with the squad in their build-up to Friday’s Test match against Canada in Colwyn Bay. They attended last weekend’s match between Canada and the Championship XV in Worcester to analyse the Canadians performance.

The Namibian Rugby Union CEO, Sybrand de Beer, said Davies and Proctor were invited to join the senior team’s coaching staff in a support role following the African Qualification Tournament in Madagascar in July.

“We held a review meeting with the coaching staff after the tournament in Madagascar to establish what was required to assist them in their planning and execution for our World Cup campaign,” he said.

De Beer said the coaching staff indicated that they would welcome the input and advice of someone who had played at the highest level.

“Phil played in 48 Test matches for Wales, including the 1987 and 1991 World Cups, and also spent two seasons with the Cardiff Blues. His experience and knowledge of local conditions will be crucial in the Welwitchias preparation for the 2015 World Cup in the United Kingdom.

“It is important that following the 2015 World Cup, we land on our feet and implement a program to ensure we have continuity going through to the 2019 and 2023 World Cup tournaments,” he added.

Proctor holds 39 caps and, until 2013, was a member of the Wales Sevens coaching staff.

Proctor will be part of the coaching staff for all three tour matches but Davies will not travel with the team to France and England.
