Tonga have added former Springboks coach Jake White to their backroom staff for the year-end tour to Asia and Europe.

White will serve as a technical advisor to head coach Mana Otai when Tonga plays Georgia, the United States and Scotland next month it was reported by TVNZ.

“Through some mutual acquaintances we got in touch with Jake and he was extremely keen to come on board,” Tonga high performance manager Peter Harding told ONE News.

“He’s had a great coaching career and has won a World Cup so his presence alone will be massive for the squad.”

The 51-year-old, who led South Africa to their second World Cup success in 2007, recently walked out on the Durban-based Sharks to ‘free himself up’ for international coaching and consulting opportunities.

He also coached the Brumbies to a Super Rugby final in 2013.

The appointment comes as a boost for the Tongan Rugby Union, which recently negotiated new funding in a meeting with IRB officials in Auckland last week.

White has not yet confirmed whether he will continue his new role at next year’s World Cup in England but Harding said discussions have been positive.

This far lesser position indicates one thing and one thing only… and that is that Jake was ousted at the Sharks.

Why would he go as Technical Assistant to Tonga, after declaring that he needed time with his family in the Cape?

Being a Technical Consultant for Tonga is a lesser role than being a Vodacom Cup coach in SA!!

    Go Jake… and stay there…

    With the naked eye,
from the surface of the Moon,
    you can see Natal.

Tonga on the other hand is invisible.

    But remember,
    Jake loves Eddie,
    and Eddie loves Jake.

But most of all……………………………………….. Jake loves Jake.

I do hope the Tongans had a good Lawyers to negotiate The Contract.

    @ Angostura:

Perhaps however if he doesn’t play his cards right he could end up in hot water.

Jake just hanging around just waiting for the letter in the post – “There are claims ARU chairman Michael Hawker has been doing the same thing, approaching former Springboks mentor Jake White. That’s also been denied.”

Ja, it does seem a bit strange that he looks to take on the Tonga job as technical advisor.

I really thought Eddie Jones was going to be Jakes Saviour.

  • 13

How can they afford him, or is he doing pro bono work as part of some outreach program?

Good luck there Jake, but you have really fallen from Grace.

With all the rubbish the Aussies are going through, maybe you were lucky not to have gotten that job

I’m not claiming to be a White expert(if you’ll excuse the pun) but I read the White book and what became immediately apparent was pure unadulterated ego. It was all about “I” and little about what the reader could learn from the experience. Shortly after nailing the WC(and the book) he ditched his wife of many years, which kind of confirmed the nuances I was reading. Since then I have been on White watch(like Skoppie I guess) and nothing has surprised me about his journey since. Absolutely nothing. Even the ‘happy clappy bit’.

    Bwahahaha…

Yeah, gives totally new meaning to the phrase “Head Hunting”!

Who would want to eat his verlepte eyes and eyelids though… and surely his tongue is as hard as rubber from all the wagging around!

Not even all the cloves and garlic in the world could make that one a tasty dish for the Tongans!

    Hie hie hie!
