The Golden Lions Rugby Union have secured the services of their successful coach, Johan Ackermann, for at least another two years.

The GLRU revealed that Ackermann signed an extension of the contract as head coach until 31 October 2016.

Ackermann will be coach of the super Rugby and Currie Cup teams.

He was officially appointed as coach by the GLRU in 2013, in the wake of the union’s acrimonious public spat with former All Black mentor John Mitchell.

Ackermann has led the Golden Lions to victory in the 2013 Vodacom Cup competition, gained readmission into the Super Rugby competition and reached the semifinals of the 2013 Currie Cup.

His reputation continued to soar this year when the Lions achieved their most successful Super Rugby season – seven wins, which included back-to-back victories in their last three matches.

GLRU Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli said he is “proud” of the team’s performance this season and the signing of Ackermann and senior players shows stability and growth.

“It is positive news to have Johan within the camp for the next two years and is a strengthening the Lion’s family,” Straeuli said.

“Johan possesses great coaching ability, he is a man of strong character and perseverance.

“We are proud of the work Johan has done with the team over the past two seasons and we are looking forward to him leading us to many future victories.”

Ackermann said he would like to thank the executive of the GLRU and the CEO for the confidence shown in him.

“Furthermore I would like to thank my excellent coaching team and my Lions players for their continuous commitment, support and efforts,” the coach said.

“I am looking forward to the challenges ahead and taking the Lions from strength to strength,” Ackermann added.
