  Never took notice of these articles, but they are important in making superbru selections, the officiating for the Force vs Chiefs game would ordinarily be easy for example, but with Lourens there it could turn into a 50/50 game.

  I see that the ref for the ‘Tahs – Rebels game is on an extended tour of duty “down under”.

  With his persona he should apply for permanent residence. He would fit in well with the proud former convict stock that consider themselves “true Australians”.

  They only refer it to the TMO so they could give everyone on TV a wrong explanation of what really happened.

  South African officials Stuart Berry and Johan Greeff have been retained for round six Super Rugby games despite being ticked off by SANZAR referees’ boss Lyndon Bray for a mistake which cost the Blues last weekend.

  Referee Berry and third match official Greeff combined to award a second-half try to the Lions in their 39-36 win over the Blues at Johannesburg despite replays showing Lions centre Deon van Rensburg had lost the ball forward in a tackle from winger Charles Piutau.

  Bray said on the SANZAR website that Greeff, under prompting from Berry, was wrong to rule Piutau had stripped the ball, which was then pounced on by Lions fullback Coenie van Wyk.

  “The onus is on the ball carrier to maintain possession while being tackled. Therefore, this should have been ruled as a knock-on and subsequently, no try,” New Zealander Bray said.

  The South African pair have faced no apparent sanction for the mistake. Both have been appointed for the same roles in another Lions’ home game, against the Queensland Reds on Saturday.

  Blues coach Sir John Kirwan contested a number of decisions from the game, his team’s third loss, and sought an explanation from SANZAR for van Wyk’s try.

  The try proved decisive, halting the Blues’ momentum as they fought back from 17-0 down at halftime.

  The following clips illustrate some of these instances from passages of play over the past two weeks of Super Rugby where the TMO has been called upon to make, or assist with a decision.

  Bray provides his written thoughts on each clip to outline the passage of play and describe how a decision was reached.

  Lyndon Bray: “Lions #13 is carrying the ball and about to attempt to score a try. Blues #11 effects a tackle and Lions #13 loses possession as a result. While the Blues player does jolt the ball out of his possession, he is not trying to deliberately ‘rip the ball’ out of the player’s possession. The onus is on the ball carrier to maintain possession while being tackled. Therefore, this should have been ruled as a knock on and subsequently, no try.”
