Victor MatfieldVictor Matfield has revealed his ambitions to coach the Springboks in future.

Sport24

Matfield, 36, retired after the 2011 Rugby World Cup, but made his return for the Bulls in a 26-19 pre-season loss to the Stormers in Polokwane on Saturday.

He also made his intentions clear that he wants to play for the Springboks again, and is eying World Cup success with the team next year in England.

But after that, the 110-Test cap veteran hopes to coach the Boks alongside his great friend and current Springbok scrumhalf, Fourie du Preez.

“I have played in three World Cups and won one. In my view, the current Bok team is the best one ever and will take the trophy next year,” Matfield told the Rapport newspaper.

“I want to be part of that team. It would be absolutely fantastic to finally walk away from the game in such a triumphant manner and then turn my focus to coaching.

“One day I want to coach the Boks with my great friend Fourie du Preez. That’s what we are both striving for.

“But for now I have to make sure I make the Bulls team. That’s the first challenge. After that we’ll see if the rest of my plans fall in place. No-one gave me any guarantees.”

Mmmm, Victor Matfield & Fourie du Preez succeeding Heyneke Meyer… sounds good to me!

Sounds great but you don’t walk into that position, maybe in 10 years, kinda need to prove themselves at provincial level first

Vic has a lot to prove before people will take this seriously. He has to play for his Springbok jersey and prove that he still has what it takes and deserves it more so than any other in his position. Then he needs to prove his coaching abilities at the Bulls and if that goes as plan he will have to compete with good coaches for the Boks’ head coaching spot. Being a good player does not make you a good coach- he needs to prove his worth. That being said- having two WC winning players as coaches would not be a bad combo to have. Hope all goes well for this legend.
