The Lions announced the signing via Twitter:

“We are pleased to confirm that scrumhalf @RickySchroeder9 will join us for the 2014 season! Welcome to the Pride of Jozi, Ricky! #Lions4Life”

Schroeder represented Western Province at Under-16 Grant Khomo Week in 2007 and the Under-18 Craven Week tournaments in 2008 and 2009.

The scrumhalf was also part of WP’s Under-19 2010 Currie Cup campaign alongside Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi and Frans Malherbe where he captained the side to the title against the Blue Bulls U19 in the final.

Schroeder represented the UCT Ikey Tigers in the Varsity Cup from 2011 to 2013.

Although he managed to make four appearances for Western Province in the 2012 Vodacom Cup, Schroeder was unable to break into WP’s Currie Cup team, and joined Boland Cavaliers on loan earlier this season in the 2013 Currie Cup first division, before signing with the Golden Lions for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Hate to say it, but this is a qouta signing to accomodate the new Vodacom Cup rules.

Anyway, welcome to JHB young man.

Make the most of the opportunity and prove me wrong.

I don’t know the man, but the Lions are a bit short at no 9. While he may not be a star, he could be a good buy, and a good back up to Bondesio and Cronje.
