SARU have made a public statement about the format of the Currie Cup PremierDivision for 2014.
In short, the proposed expansion to 8 teams from the current 6, has been rejected by a Special General Council meeting of the stakeholders of SA Rugby.
The Media Release reads as follows:
“Media are advised that a proposal to expand the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division to eight teams in 2014 was rejected by a Special General Council meeting of South African Rugby Union provinces in Johannesburg on Monday.
A second proposal – dependent on the success of the first – that the Lions be entrenched in Vodacom Super Rugby for the next two years therefore fell away.
As a result, the status quo remains and the winners of the Absa Currie Cup First Division title in 2013 will play the last-placed team in the Premier Division for the chance of promotion to the 2014 Premier Division.”
Watson fumes at minnow unions
2013-10-01 10:21 News24
EP Rugby Union president, Cheeky Watson, is upset at smaller provincial unions who voted against an expanding Currie Cup.
Hoop hy ‘fume’ tot die vlamme by sy ou hol uitslaan!
‘Minnow unions’ nogal, wat dink Sheiky is die Kings, n reuse unie?
@ Pietman:
Can’t see the Pumas being beaten in CC 1st Division this year, so EP condemned again to at least a year in the wilderness.
The whole situation is actually a Fark Up of note.
Lions are fighting with the Leopards and Pumas, their “franchise” partners in SR over “financial” matters, the Kings can’t win propmotion to CC, but are guaranteed a chance to play off for SR participation.
There seems to be no logic behind any of the structures.
Ah well, I’m sure that Messrs Hokins and Roux are totally in control of the situation and will do the absolute best thing for SA Rugby.
@ Pietman:
You know if it were anyone other than Cheecky I’d be inclined to have more sympathy.
