Pretoria – Wallaby flyhalf Matt Giteau’s hit on Fourie du Preez in the Tri-Nations Test at Newlands two weeks ago, which went unpunished, caused a major outcry in South Africa among the public and rugby officials alike – but the Springboks are not out to get retribution when they play the Wallabies in Perth in a week’s time.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers made it very clear on Friday after the Boks’ training session at Tukkies.

“As far as I’m concerned, Giteau did nothing wrong. After all, he was found not guilty, whatever we may think about it,” said a very diplomatic De Villiers.

“And no, we will not target him next week. He is a very good player and just another member of the Wallabies team. We will not take the law into our own hands,” said de Villiers.

He said the Springboks did not believe in matches within matches, which made them lose focus and resulted in team work suffering because of it.

Giteau was yellow-carded for taking Du Preez out under a high ball when he didn’t have his feet on the ground. It was generally expected that Giteau would be cited, but to the amazement of many he came off scot-free.
