A round-up of the latest news shorts from the weekend’s rugby.

The Force match had the commentators all abuzz with the news that Will Genia had been offered a A$600,000 deal, and had accepted. Gushing commentators were happily extolling the virtues of Genia, Pock (thought to have just about re-signed and Sharpe all in the same team. But Genia’s had a change of heart.

Seems that the Reds have successfully hoodwinked him into changing his mind, and re-signing a 3 year deal with them… Bet thats pissed off the boys down at the Farce HQ!

In an ‘edge of the seat’ game, the Leinster boys managed to hold off Clermont to set up the first all-Irish Heineken Cup final against Ulster by narrowly defeating French side Clermont 19-15 in Bordeaux on Sunday.

Cian Healy put Leinster into the lead early in the second half with a brilliant try – only one of the match, and they managed to keep in front through some courageous defense as Clermont sent wave after wave at the Leinster defense. A Clermont try was disallowed just befor half time, and the Leinster lads had to hold off a couple of late penalties on their line before getting one of their own and chipping the ball into touch.

They will join Ulster after stand out player, Ruan Pienaar led them to a 22-19 victory over Edinburgh on Saturday. Ulster, the 1999 champions made it to their first final in 13 years after Pioneer scored 17 points – a 100% kicking record.

Flyhalf Danny Cipriani’s contract with the Melbourne Rebels has been terminated with immediate effect, why am I not surprised. The self-styled poster boy, who agreed a deal with Sale Sharks last month, is said to have left on mutual terms with the  Rebels.

The only mutual thing in the agreement is the Rebels selectors agreeing never to make the same mistake again.

The Chiefs have re-signed of 26-year-old flanker Tanerau Latimer. He has signed a two year contract with the Chiefs, which will take him to the end of the 2014 season. He joined the Chiefs in 2007, after making his debut for the Crusaders in 2006.

Former Springbok coach Jake White says it would be a tragedy if a team with as much rugby history as the Lions were to drop out of the Super Rugby competition.

With so much speculation that the Lions are in danger of losing their Super Rugby place to the Southern Kings at the end of the year, Jake White has jumped to their defense, saying it would be a travesty to lose a team steeped in South African history.

“I hope it doesn’t happen, the reality is especially a franchise like the Lions has a lot of history,” White said.

Highlanders and England player, flank James Haskell, has been cited for alleged foul play during his side’s Super Rugby clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

James Haskell is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4 (a) (Punching or striking) when he struck Cheetahs flank Justin Downey twice as he left a scrum.

Lions replacement flyhalf Butch James has been suspended for four weeks after he was cited for foul play in their clash against the Brumbies.

SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Mike Heron accepted a guilty plea from James for contravening Law 10.4 (h) (A player must not charge into a ruck or maul. Charging includes any contact made without use of the arms, or without grasping that player), after he was cited following the match on Friday evening.

Is it just me or is everybody die moer in about the Cheetahs game? I still can’t believe they have lost. It really messed up my Sunday!

    1@ Boerewors:
Let’s face it, it happens far too often for it to be of no consequence.

If I hadn’t seen the look on Ebersohn’s face, I’d have been looking for the Pakistani bookmaker in the (somewhat sparse) crowd. The poor lad’s face told it all though.

The only miss I’ve seen that was more consequential was Gavin Hastings’ miss in the semi final of the 1991 World Cup from a similar position. Conditions were worse, but the miss just as bad, and it handed the English the win.

@ Scrumdown:That Hastings kick brings back some bad memories – imagine being married to a Scottish lass with a rugby mad family – we were in mourning for weeks. And all when I was young and virile!
