The Brumbies have suffered a major blow as Matt Toomua has been ruled out for the rest of the Super Rugby season after he re-injured his knee playing against the Sharks.

The Brumbies lost the match 26-29 to the Sharks and now scans have revealed a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee – the same one that he injured when he was playing against the Cheetahs three weeks ago.

Toomua was playing in his first game back against the Sharks and tried to evade a Sharks defender with a change of direction but immediately went to ground in pain.

Brumbies coach has now been forced to concede that in hindsight they may have rushed Toomua back into the team.

“It’s funny – in coaching you always have to make some risks and we say the biggest risk is not taking a risk,” said White after the match.

“He was ready to go,” White told AAP.

“But it wasn’t the right call to bring him back this week.

“One never knows. The reality is maybe we rushed him back, but we did the same with (lock) Leon Power and he’s just gotten better and better.”

The loss of Toomua is a blow for the Brumbies as White admitted last week that the playmaker was a vital part of his backline.
