The Springbok Management have delayed the naming of the squad to face the Irish at Croke Park on Saturday due to a long list of injuries and niggles that some of the front line Bokke have sustained against Italy and on Tour.
The Team doctor, Craig Roberts, assesed the Bokke on Sunday, after the Italy game, and on a press conference in Dublin today told those in attendance that 8 players were being treated for injuries and that it will only be clear as the week unfolds who will be available for Saturday.
The walking wounded include Zane Kirchner (knee), Adi Jacobs (rolled ankle), Fourie du Preez (hand), Bakkies Botha (stiff back), Bismarck du Plessis (rib), Schalk Burger (rib), Adriaan Strauss (back) and CJ van der Linde (hamstring).
At this stage it is unknown who will be ready to play and who will not but the medical staff will work overtime to ensure that as many of the wounded are ready to take the field this weekend.
The amount of injuries forced Peter de Villiers, the National Coach, to cancel the Team’s field practise session for today, Monday, but said that they (the Team) would rather concentrate on the indoors aspects, namely video sessions and a gym sessoin.
The coach told the press that he was preparing the Team as he would for any other Test.
“The Irish have a great team and they have shown in the Six Nations this year how good they are. They have also had a good run of results recently. This Test is no different to any we have played so far this year and we are preparing for it in that way,” he said.
**************************
Looking at the current injuries, I’m not too concerned about those of CJ van der Linde and Schalk Burger because they are ably replaced by Jean Deysel and Wian du Preez or Tendai Mtawarira, in fact those two were’nt even in the match day squad last Saturday.
The main concern lies in the injuries of Bakkies Botha and Fourie du Preez, both being key to Bok success this year.
It appears that somebody fell on Fourie du Preez’ hand during the latter stages of the match against Italy and the two alternatives for his position would be Francois Hougaard and Ruan Pienaar who have both been used extensively as utility players at their Franchises and in the Bokke setup.
A replacement for Bakkies Botha is not so easy, there is no other enforcer lock like Bakkies in our Bokke setup on Tour and should he be unable to recover, Andries Bekker would have to fulfil the role as No 4 lock, as he did on Saturday when Bakkies was replaced during the game. Bakkies is struggling with a stiff back, apparently aggrevated by the flight to Dublin.
With the injuries to the hookers, Bismarck and Strauss, it now seems even more logical to let John Smit revert to his natural position of hooker in stead of tight head prop, a step I would have done anyway. So, we need either of Bismarck or Strauss to recover sufficiently to warm the bench against Ireland.
The nature of the injury to Adi Jacobs seems to be a rolled ankle injury and this does not overly concern me either, I (and most armchair supporters) would have preferred Wynand Olivier to take up the No 12 berth anyway, so it might indeed be a blessing in disguise.
One wonders how bad the injury to Zane Kirchner is and we hope that he recovers sufficiently to take his place because it might mean that Ruan Pienaar would have to stand in to cover the fullback position, leaving only Francois Hougaard to cover for Fourie du Preez at No 9.
This, mercyfully, is the last game for the Bokke on Tour and for the year, except for 9 players who will stay behind in the UK and who will play for the Baabaas against the All Blacks.

10 from SA in the Baabaas team… 9 Bokke and the one uncapped player, WP Nel.
Hell, I actually wish the 9 Bokke would not have to play…. the season has been too long and of the 9 Bokke 3 are actually carrying injuries.

Snyplek

Eet ‘n boks Smarties.

RRRRrrrrt!

3 – GBS the Boks that are going to play in that BaaBaa game is just stupid. Especially the injured players. Crazy. Only WP. Nel should play the rest should just head for the airport and come home after the Ireland game.
10 – don’t give them ideas, just shuuussshh now Puma!! 😆
Is a wounded bok as dangerous as a wounded lion? Just a question.
Jacobs has been watching rugby videos. Latest news!

Any bets around?
