The last in the Stormers squad instalments, these two make up the back line.

Not a lot here, Pieterson is the incumbent, and Tim Swiel is a youngster. Hmmm, interesting.

This brings to an end my part of the Super Rugby section, I must say, having gone through the process, yes, there are some weaknesses, and yes, we have lost some talent through what I can only assume is incompetence, but on the whole, when the squad is whittled down to it’s final level, I am happy with what I see.

The weak areas for me are at prop, fly half, and perhaps the fullback position, but for the backs, on the whole, they are interchangeable, young, and talented, and will, I am sure, do the job. As for the props, lets just hope they find some inner strength somewhere.

Enjoy the season, let the best team win, and see you all on the far side.

Johan Christiaan (Joe) Pietersen

HEIGHT 180 cm

WEIGHT 80 Kg

BIRTH DATE 18 May 1984 – Age 27

DHL Stormers Vodacom Super Rugby – 2006

Full back

Can play at full back, wing or flyhalf if needed. Joe is a versatile fullback, having just returned from a stint at Bayonne, he will slot straight back into his preferred position. He will take over from Conrad Jantjies, and apart from being very dependable under the high ball, good in defence and attack, he can place kick if needs be.

Timothy Gregory (Tim) Swiel

HEIGHT 179 cm

WEIGHT 80 Kg

BIRTH DATE

Full back

Tim Swiel, just 18 y/o joined the Stormers for the 2012 season. By AC’s own admission, he hasn’t seen much of him, but he excelled at schoolboy rugby for Bishops. He will slot in at full back as understudy to Joe Pietersen. It is rumoured though, that this kid has prodigious talent…watch this space.

Have heard tales of wonder, about Swiel, time will tell. Joe Pietersen will fit right in with his neat hairdo. Didn’t stop Monty from playing some good football, so Pietersen should do just fine.

Joe Pietersen was really shaping before he left for France, but unfortunately did not see much game time in France.

Glad to see Joe Pietersen back in super rugby. He started to shape well before he left. Hope he picks-up where he left.

So by the way super job JFK with all your post on the Stormer hopefulls. I’ve read through all of your posts and enjoyed it thoroughly; very informative. Interesting the amount of ‘coloureds’ coming through in province rugby.

3@ McLook:Thanks, what has amazed me throughout the process is how little information we have on our players, or teams in this country. Thats what makes what you are doing so important. Your efforts are creating a historical timeline of South African rugby history, without which, would be lost to future generations.

Elstadt, Bekker and Vermeulen were all back in training yesterday, and taking some contact – possibility of them playing on Saturday. Duvenage should be back in training next week also. THat means almost full strength for the start of the season proper. Good news.
