In this final edition of the series of articles, dissecting the contenders for the Cheetahs squad, we are going to look at the players vying for the fullback berth. GBS has been putting the pressure on, for me to finish, in the vain hope that the Breezers, Guppies, Pink Nulle, and Kitties get their contenders on the table.
It is almost time, but still almost a month before the first salvos in this years Super Rugby competition gets fired.
Enough time methinks for these scribes to put fingers to keyboards!
Without further ado, here are the Cheetahs contenders for the Last Outpost:
The Contenders:
Hendrik Joseph (Hennie) Daniller:
D.O.B: 05 April 1984
Vital Statistics: (H) 194 cm (W) 101 kg
His claim: Cape Town born (poor fella) and a product of Paarl Gym. He has had quite a busy rugby career to date. u/18 Craven Week for WP in 2002, and in the same year SA Schools team. Signed for the Bulls in 2003, and was selected for the Junior Boks for the IRB- FIRA u/19 World Cup in the same year. In 2004 and 2005 he was again part of the u/21 Junior Bok team. He continued to represent the Bulls, at Vodacom Cup, and Currie Cup level until2006. He then moved to the Boland for a year, and then finally settled at the Cheetahs in 2008. He has been the prefered choice at the Cheetahs since.
Strengths: A big rangy player, with a prodigous boot. He fits the Cheetahs game plan well, linking with players on attack from deep, and sending booming touchfinders. Very good under the high bombs as well.
Weaknesses: None worth mentioning.
Bok poetential: 28 years old, I doubt it, but a very useful player to have.
Rudi Vogt:
D.O.B: 30 January 1983
Vital statistics: (H) 192 cm (W) 92 Kg
His claim: Born in Paarl, it seems Vogt came out of nowhere to be selected for the Emerging Boks in 2008. He started his senior rugby career at the Pumas in 2007, and he represented them in the Vodacom, and Currie Cup until 2009. In that period he experienced Super rugby action with the Lions. In 2010 he was signed by Griquas, and had a sterling season in 2011.
Strengths: Also a big lad, Rudi is a potent counter attack weapon from fullback. He is also an accomplished goal kicker. Good under the high ball, and a good punter of the ball.
Weaknesses: None really.
Bok potential: A late bloomer, it is doubtful.
The following contenders have already been discussed in previous posts:
Willie le Roux, Riaan Smit and Nico Scheepers.
My Picks:
Hennie Daniller’s big boot, safety under the high ball, and consitency, should seee him get the nod. Willie le Roux seems to be earmarked for the role fulfilled by Riaan Viljoen, and he will push Hennie hard. Strangely enough, Vogt would be a good choice for most teams, but he seems to be the last man standing, with le Roux’s “flair” factor seemingly getting Naka’s nod. Not that Vogt, lacked any attacking flair, to my mind. That said, Naka has enough cover for fullback, with Vogt, Scheepers, and Smit able to slot in should any of Daniller, or le Roux get injured.
So it’s now all down to the players and the coach. The Cheetahs have got a very useful group of players with a nice blend of experience, and youth.
So now lets hear it from the BOYS! (Stormers, Lions, Bulls, and Sharks)
VRYSTAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!
PS! Dankie Cheetah4Never vir jou reeks, was ‘n goeie vuurdoop vir jou.
@ GBS,
Nie my skuld ons het so moer baie talent in die Rosestad nie! Glo jy behoort die Pienk Nulle se groep in twee artikels te kan afhandel. As ek rerig die Vrystaat talent bespreek het, dan was helfte van die nulle se squad ook gecover lol.
Ongeskik! Gmmmmfff
6 @ Cheetah4eva:
Blingfontein!
Lekker plek, snaakse plek, eintlik ‘n moerse groot dorp.
3@ Cheetah4eva:
You know, I think that our team has a chance in the SA Conference, we won Down Under last year and we will always be strong at home, no matter who the opposition is [ just ask the Crusaders].
I always back the VRYSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT [ which is why I never do well in superbru] and really think that this year we can end mid table and 2nd or 3rd in the SA part of the tournament.
8 @ Loskoppie,
Stem, I think we have done well to retain the bulk of last years squad, and we have exposed some promising yong players to senior rugby in the CC. The loss of Pretorius, and Viljoen is not as major, as some think. In fact I think van Zyl will be as exciting on attack, and decidedly better on defence. Viljoen is a very good player, and an elusive runner, but by all accounts, so is young Willie le Roux.
Besides, Naka has generally prefered to play Daniller as 1st choice fullback in anycase.
On the plus side, we are decidedly better placed, at FH, where Naka started out with Naas Olivier, last year, we now know what we have in Sias, and what we might have in Goosen (I rate this boykie very highly)
No reason why we can’t hope for a conference win, and maybe S15 playoffs!
Go Cheeetahs!
