SANZAR has announced Melbourne as the 15th Super Rugby Team to join the competition when expansion occurs in 2011.
An Expert Determination Panel was asked by the SANZAR Executive Committee to decide on the location of the 15th Super Rugby team. The Experts were former Rugby World Cup-winning captain David Kirk and retired New Zealand High Court Judge, the Hon Barry Paterson QC. The key reasons for the Experts selecting Melbourne over the other applicant, the Southern Kings from South Africa, were:
The Experts commented that both applicants were able to point to excellent infrastructure support, and both provided sound business plans and financial forecasts, with the support of their National Unions, guaranteeing financial viability.
The Southern Kings proposal was more advanced with regard to business and financial planning and organization structure and governance. The Southern Kings were also able to point to a strong rugby tradition, a large playing base and presented a stronger case than Melbourne as to their rugby readiness.
These strengths of the Southern King’s Application did not, however, offset the benefits in geographical location and commercial value to SANZAR (both of which criteria the Experts were asked to place considerable weight on) that the Melbourne Application was able to deliver.
The 15th Super Rugby team will play in the Australian Conference under the new Super Rugby competition format from 2011. This means they will play both home and away against the other four Australian Conference teams. As a result the Southern Kings would be required to make two crossings of the Indian Ocean in a season. The local derby aspect of matches in Australia, an important issue for generating attendances and broadcasting value, would also have been diluted and it would not have been possible to schedule at least two matches in each country each weekend. In addition having the team resident in South Africa introduces additional costs to SANZAR of around NZ$720,000 per annum.
The Melbourne Application provided considerably greater commercial benefit to SANZAR than the Southern Kings Application. Evidence was provided that revenue from the sale of broadcasting rights to Australasian broadcasters would be reduced by US$15-20m over the course of a five year agreement should the 15th team be resident in South Africa, with little or no commensurate rise in the value of South African broadcasting revenue.

No surprise think we all knew Melbourne was going to get it.
Do they have the players? Not so sure about that.

Maar die k@k gaan nou eers begin spat! Volgens News24 het Komphela klaar vandag pressure op SARU geplaas om hul plan met die Kings te verduidelik:
Butana Komphela, chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on sport, insisted on Tuesday that SARU should commit itself to a date as there has been an undertaking for three years to get the Kings – a combination of Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts – competing.
SARU president Oregan Hoskins said after appearing in front of the committee that rugby’s governing body could not commit itself to a date.
Hoskins and four other members of SARU’s top brass have to inform Komphela of the date in a closed meeting in two weeks’ time.
ANC MPs, in particular, insisted on Tuesday that the Kings have to get off the ground as it will help transform the Springbok side. Most black rugby players play for clubs in the Eastern Cape.
Hoskins told committee members that SARU are committed to establishing the Kings, “but it may not happen as quickly as some people would like”.
So, wat gaan nou gebeur? Een van twee, of twee van die huidige Suid Afrikaanse S14 spanne smelt saam-wat nie gaan werk nie- of die SA span wat laaste eindig in volgende seisoen se S14 gaan moet plek maak vir die Kings???
Velle gaan nou behoorlik begin waai!
KingPaul @3

Ek nou terug bed toe, nag
superBul @4
Gisteraand teruggekom op SS, almal slaap hier, ek het n kort rukkie geslaap, sukkel met n kiestand jong, gaan hom vanoggend laat trek, moet net eers n tandarts gaan soek sodra die son opkom!
So nie, trek ek dit self, so sukkel ek nie verder nie….intussen dwaal ek hier in die huis rond en kou naeltjies vir die pyn, sommer lus en drink n KWV by dit!
Tjeers, praat later, gaan maar weer bietjie le.
Mmmm, this was to be expected… nobody’s surprised… except maybe the domkoppe at SARU.
Get the Kings up and running… and institute a relegation system, simple as that.. every year the last placed SA Super 14/5 team makes place for the relegated team… it will mean the Kings play every second year… because they will be relegated each year that they participate. In the alternating years it will be between the Stormers, Lions and Cheetahs who will be relegated…. hehehe
2 – KingPaul,
Morning boet, Not sure how it will work. If the team that ends last each year gets a chance into the S15 then we wont see teams build. I feel then Kings, Lions and Cheetahs will takes turns to play S15 as one of them will end last in the SA part of the comp.
So not sure what the answer is. Also where is Melbourne going to get their players? They don’t have enough as it is.
Diepte meskien? Sharks wat al hul spelers koop ;-)?
