Former Springboks and Vodacom Bulls legend Victor Matfield will join the Vodacom Bulls on a consultancy basis for the 2012 Super Rugby season.
Official Bulls release
Matfield will be used as a specialist coach, concentrating on line-outs and general forward play on a weekly basis.
The most capped lock in Springbok rugby will soon start a new career in sports broadcasting as a pundit on SuperSport’s rugby channels, but has been given permission to assist the Vodacom Bulls as a consultant.
“This is great news for us,” commented Vodacom Bulls Head: Rugby, Heyneke Meyer.
“Vic has been the backbone of the Bulls for many seasons and to have his continued presence in the team, although unfortunately not as a player anymore, is a real bonus for us. He is generally rated as the finest line-out analyst in the game and we are proud and honoured to have him around.”
Matfield was also very excited about the opportunity.
“I am very keen to get stuck in at SuperSport and will give it a full go, but it is no secret that I want to become involved in coaching too. This will afford me the opportunity to do both, something that I am very pleased about.
Prepare for the fact that the Bulls will have an awesome lineout, right through….. again!
Bulls have an awesome Lock Factory… and Matfield will enhance that even more!
GBS, the current Bulls locks are good, but hardly a lock factory.
The WP / Stormers have better locks at the moment, but lack in the coaching dept.
2 @ Loosehead:
Just watch Juandre Kruger have a sublime season in 2012!
Stormers have Langbek (the centre) and the exciting young Etsebeth for No 5 lock…. and Rynhardt Elstadt and not Much more for No 4 lock.
Bulls have Juandre Kruger & Wilhelm Steenkamp & Daniel Adongo for No 5 locks…. and Flip van der Merwe & Gerrit-Jan van Velze for No 4 lock, remembering that they lost 3 Springboks in recent weeks.
Over the years the Bulls have churned out Springbok lock after Springbok lock… by far the Country’s greatest lock factory…
@ grootblousmile:
iSN’T vAN vELZE AN 8?
4 @ Loosehead:
He was, yes…. but they are in the process of converting him to No 4 lock. He’s got the lenght and the grunt for a No 4 lock.
He already played at lock this Currie Cup.
Bulls have soooo many exciting loosies coming to the foreground now, that they need Velle at lock.
Upcoming Bulls loosies who will most probably make it big in future are Arno Cronje, CJ Stander, Jacques Potgieter (bought from the Kings and has played the whole Currie Cup) and Warrick Tecklenburg…. maybe Lusaseni too!
That is in addition to 3 Springbok loosies already in the saddle at the Bulls, namely Deon Stegmann, Dewald Potgieter & Pierre Spies.
@ grootblousmile:
And the Nigerian poached from the Tjarks.
