Former Springbok loose forward Solly Tyibilika has been shot dead here, according to reports.
Craig Ray, senior rugby writer for the Times and Weekender newspapers said on the social networking site, Twitter, that a police spokesperson confirmed Tyibilika’s death.
“Nyanga Police spokesperson confirms the death of Solly Tyibilika but says incident occurred in Gugulethu,” tweeted Ray.
Kuanda Ntunja, Xhosa commentator rugby commentator at pay-channel SuperSport, also confirmed Tyibilika’s death on the social network.
“Just heard shocking news.
“I have been told that he was shot and murdered in cape town. R.I.P. Solly Tyibilika.
“Makhaya Jack (former SARU player) has just come from Sollys home in PE and he has confirmed…Solly Tyibilika has passed away,” Ntunja tweeted on Sunday afternoon.
Tyibilika, 32, played eight Test matches for the Springboks between 2004 and 2006. He played provincial rugby for Griquas, the Sharks, Golden Lions, Southern Kings and Border.
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) on Sunday expressed its dismay at the reported death of former Springbok flank Solly Tyibilika. Media reported that the 32-year-old had been shot dead at a tavern in the Cape Town township of Nyanga on Sunday afternoon. Police confirmed a shooting but had not formally identified the victim last night.
“Solly was a trailblazer among black African Springboks and if the reports are correct, to lose him so suddenly and in this brutal manner is very distressing. The casual disregard for life in our society is shocking ,” said Mr Oregan Hoskins, president of SARU.
“His emergence was a demonstration of what can be achieved when talent is combined with opportunity in what is always a very competitive position in Springbok rugby. I remember a very talented player and an immensely likable young man who rose far and fast to become a Springbok early in his career.”
Tyibilika was born in Port Elizabeth and first played rugby ay Loyiso High School in the Zwide Township. He made his professional debut for Griquas in 2001 before moving on to the Lions and the Sharks.
He made his Test debut in 2004 against Scotland in Edinburgh, earning the distinction of scoring a try on his first appearance to achieve the significant milestone in rugby history of becoming the first black African to score a Test try for the Springboks.
He played in eight Tests in total – scoring three tries – the last of them against New Zealand in Pretoria in 2006.
He moved to the Lions in 2007 but never settled in Johannesburg and re-emerged in his native Eastern Cape playing for Border between 2008 and 2010, captaining the Bulldogs from time to time. He had spent the 2011 season playing club rugby for Hamiltons in Cape Town.
He made 158 first-class appearances in all, scoring 24 tries, for Griquas, Sharks, Lions and Border, including 16 appearances in Vodacom Super Rugby for the Sharks.
Shocking and very sad. Rest in peace Solly
RIP Solly.
Tragic only 32.
Condolences to his family.
For what it’s worth, IMO SA Rugby and Solly’s various Provincial Unions are firmly to balme for this.
A young talent plucked from obscurity into the high life of money fame and fortune.
No mentor, no life skills coach, and ultimately no chance.
RIP Solly. You, as all young talents, desrve(d) better.
See my comments on the last Earl Rose thread, and maybe you’ll all realise, that I think this same situation is just waiting to jump up and bite other youngsters in a similar position.
He was a very good player, not Springbok quality, but decent enough at CC and S14 level.
RIP
Bit of a shock to wake up to on a Monday morning, after Roebucks death over the w/e. Agree with all the sentiments above, RIP Solly
Sorry i must go open my shop will read all your coments later
I know that the crime is nothing new in SA, but when it happens to, or involves high profile people, eg. Solly, Andrew Hall, John Mitchell, Bees Roux, Joseph Ntshongwana, it really paints the country in a bad, light. The worlds media will jump on the band wagon again and we will all be tarnished with the same brush. Even Roebucks death will always be seen as suspicious. It is incredibly sad that we live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but that it is made so ugly by a few fellow human beings.
Cheers Solly!
Its sad to read about this, condolences to the loved ones left behind, RIP Solly.
Sad news, he was a good player, but seemed a troubled soul. Condolences to his loved ones
@ Lion4ever:
a troubled soul he appeared to be…indeed. Hamba Kahle Solly, I for one enjoyed watching you play.
