Lions flyhalf Butch James been suspended for four weeks after being found guilty of dangerous play.
James faced a SANZAR Judicial Hearing in Johannesburg on Wednesday after being cited for a dangerous high tackle on Sharks flank Keegan Daniel in a Super Rugby match last weekend.
SANZAR Judicial Officer Rob Stelzner found James guilty of contravening Law 10.4 (e) and classified the offense as mid-range.
As the Lions have a bye in the final round of the Super Rugby tournament, Stelzner, in terms of Regulation 17, has ruled that the commencement of the sanction be deferred to Monday 20 June.
James is therefore effectively suspended from all rugby until 17 July 2011.
Dagse maybe you know more about this one Gbs. Other than missing out on the Lions Currie Cup opener on the 16th July am not sure how this ban will affect Butch James, its hardly much of a 4 week ban more like a one week ban if the player is only going to miss out on one game. The Tri nations starts the following weekend for the Boks so this means Butch would be available if selected. When it says the players are banned from all rugby does it mean they are banned from playing the games but still allowed to train with their teams in the periods or is it a complete lockout?

They can train with the team… just no games played.

Ok thanks for clearing that one up Gbs, so its not that much of a punishment really, in effect just a one week ban. I have said before that for these bans to be effective they need to be carried forward into the players next playing season, whether that be domestic or international.
Whatever possessed him to make that tackle, he knows Daniel is a slippery character, but then take his legs. Clearly he was trying to stop Daniel distributing the ball quickly, then you meet him face to face and grab the ball. This is a Brian Lima tactic, going for the chest and then just off and bang, suspended with his record, now everybody is watching him again.
