It appears that the injury to Bulls scrumhalf Fourie du Preez is worse than initially thought, with scans revealing a grade 2 tear in the medial ligaments of the knee. This injury will not only keep him out of the weekend’s Super Rugby clash with the Cheetahs, but also for at least the rest of the league stages of the Super Rugby Competition.
He should struggle to make it in time for the play-off’s, should the Bulls progress that far in the Competition.
Du Preez, who has played 111 times for the Bulls, had a scan on his knee on Monday after a freak clash with Werner Kruger in the match against the Sharks last Saturday, but played on till the end of the game.
This places the Bulls in a rather precarious position, with them having to win every week from hereon in, to keep hopes alive of defending their title. Luckily the Bulls also have SA’s No 2 incumbant scrumhalf, Francois Hougaard, to fall back on in the absense of Fourie du Preez.
The Bulls will miss Du Preez’ pin-point tactical kicking during this critical stage of the Competition and one wonders whether it would be wise to risk Fourie du Preez in the play-off’s, thinking about the greater good of South African rugby and the Rugby World Cup chances of the Springboks.
Other Bulls niggles include Wynand Olivier’s bruised elbow, Gerhard van den Heever’s sore shoulder, Werner Kruger’s sore neck and Pierre Spies’s bruised hip. All these players should be fighting fit from Tuesday onwards and Zane Kirchner is expected to have recovered from the bout of flu which kept him out of the Sharks clash.
Advantage VRYSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!
Damn!
He was just starting to get back some decent form… just for this to happen.
nie goed vir die bokke nie GRRRRRREAT vir die cheetahs, hoop die ou kom gou reg
SuperSport reporting it could be the end of Fourie’s season!
Why is there no Lions or Cheetahs option on the new poll?
5@ Scrumdown:
The Lions can do NO BETTER than 10th place on the Combined Log, from hereon in… even if they beat all comers 100 / 0.
The Cheetahs… well, their chances are mathematically there, I suppose, but they’ll end at most on 54 Log points… and I think it’ll take 55 or more to qualify for 6th spot.

But you are denying me my constitutional right to waste my vote on a lost cause.
Ouch this is not good news, can remember reading after the game some folk commenting on how nasty it looked and how they couldn’t believe he got up and carried on playing after he hurt his knee. Why was he not taken off straight away, was all the damage done in the initial injury or has it been worsened by playing on after it happened? Where does this leave the Bulls for scrumhalf cover, apart from Hougaard who else do we have of Super 15 class?
Another reason for us Bulls to get Ruan Pienaar in.
VRYSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!
How was that one, Loosehead? I’ve been practising you see……
@ fender:
Not a bad effort, you should have a little more emphasis on the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA part of it though.
