The rock-hard British and Irish lock Simon Shaw will not be playing in South Africa next year.

The Lions are in need of some decent locks and tried to get Shaw to join up with the Johannesburg franchise in next years s14. His experience would’ve been invaluable.
But Shaw, 36, will not be joining the Lions because of injuries.

The GLRU statement reads:

“The Golden Lions Rugby Union would like to clarify that Simon Shaw will not be joining the GLRU in 2010.

“The Union were intending on signing Shaw for the 2010 Super 14 and Currie Cup, but due to the injuries recently sustained, which will see him only returning to rugby in February 2010, the Union with thus not be signing Shaw.”

Pity, I am sure that a Jan of his calibre would have helped the Lions a great deal.

    Now who will coach them?

  • 2

    @Loosehead

Agree, Shaw couldve made a huge difference helping young players there!
They need to appoint a coach soon. Most teams start preparing for the s14 end of November/early December.

7@grootblousmile – So will all the Bulls supporters suddenly become Lions fans?

  • 10

    9@Loosehead – No, but we’ll start respecting the Lions a bit… hehehe

Heyneke could be the one man putting the Lions back on the map…. many of the best players would want to be coached by him and play for him….

  • 11

@grootblousmile – #10 I agree with that, if anyone can get the Lions back on track it is Heynecke…..damn, he should just come back to the Bulls

This release by the Lions is a crock. This is not what it seems

The real story is as follows:

London Wasps Director of Rugby Tony Hanks has responded to the recent Simon Shaw situation with a statement which contradicts what the Golden Lions have been saying about their signing of Simon Shaw.

Reports in South African media last week stated that Shaw had agreed to join the Golden Lions for the Super14 and the Currie Cup.

However Hanks says that the Golden Lions have made no contact with Wasps in order to sign Shaw.

“No approach has been made to the club by any parties with regards to Simon Shaw.” said Hanks.

The media reports last week stated that the deal was done and that Shaw only needed to sign on the dotted line in order to become a Golden Lions player.

London Wasps however say that Shaw is their player and they have no plans to release him, “He is contracted to London Wasps until the end of June 2011.” added Hanks.

On Tuesday the Lions issued their own press release stating that they would not be signing Shaw as he was out injured and that he will only return to playing rugby in February which is when the Super 14 starts again.

London Wasps however say that Shaw will be back in action for them sooner rather than later.

@TonyM – #17 My goodness, seems to be some underhandedness going on!!!!! Probably tried to do it behind the Wasps back……Eish

  • 19

17@TonyM – Yip, this puts a different spin on things.

Why in the world does both the GLRU and also WP Rugby Unions seem incapable to work within permission structures when contracting players, yet it never seems to be a problem with the Bulls, Sharks & Cheetahs…

Is it because the Bulle have a quality man doing things at the Bulls in Ian Schwartz and similar situations at the Sharks and the Cheetahs?

  • 20

@grootblousmile – #19, ja dit is nogal scary, is there no more business ethics going around, why not jkust do things the right way? they were obviously negotiating with Shaw without working through the wasps.

  • 21

    @grootblousmile

Ian Schwartz is doing great work at the Bulls. I’ve always heard good things about him regarding spotting player talent etc.

  • 22

21@Supa Die Bloubul – Ive also only heard good things about HOM

    Hehehehe
