The Blue Bulls are the biggest losers from the Springbok reconditioning program that kicks off from this week until the 6th of October.

SA Rugby released the names of the players or contracted Springboks that will take part in the program supervised by their union conditioning teams. The Blue Bulls will be without 7 of their front-line players, some of which include players who did not get that much game time with the Springboks during the recent incoming and Tri-Nations test matches. Bakkies Botha whose suspension has run its course is on the list, as is Wynand Olivier.

Western Province will be without Schalk Burger, Jaque Fourie and Habana amongst others with the Sharks losing the services of the Beast and Bismarck.

A significant loss to the Cheetahs will be their captain Juan Smith.

Players will be withdrawn until 6 October and only be available for the last round of Currie Cup matches and the play-offs should their teams make it that far.

List of contract Boks to be withdrawn from the Currie Cup:

Vodacom Blue Bulls – Victor Matfield , Danie Rossouw, Bakkies Botha, Wynand Olivier, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez and Pierre Spies
The Sharks – John Smit, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira, JP Pietersen and Adi Jacobs
Vodacom Western Province – Schalk Burger, Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Ricky Januarie and Andries Bekker
Vodacom Free State Cheetahs – Juan Smith, Heinrich Brüssow and CJ van der Linde

I would have loaned BB for 2 matches, he needs game time and we must see how he reacts to the sword over his head.

Sharks build up great steam, now without some of their regular CC players, this might affect them badly

  • 2

Hmmmm see Ricky is also there!!!!! They should just send him to a fat farm, where there are no McDonalds/Kentucky’s/Steers close by 🙂

  • 3

Morne I would love to know what this re conditioning program aims to achieve and how they will go about that aim.
Obviously I have my own thoughts on that, but it interests me to see what they are thinking.
Especially if they are conceding that these players have played too much rugby and are burnt out.
    Which naturally begs the question:
Why would you plan to have your most experienced players burn out during the key international tournament of the year?
Why have the Aussies and Kiwis not suffered from the same problem?

Did you see that kick on the “what Divvie serves us” thread ?

    I posted the link.

    @ tight head:

As far as the official statement goes it would appear each player received and individual program which they will follow under the guidance of their union conditioning teams.

    @ Blouste:

    One by the Grey flyhalf?

    Yeah saw that.

    Morné

Yip that one, HUGE kick hey !

  • 7

    @ Blouste:

    Massive

    @ Blouste:
Blouste onthou jy DeWet Ras?

  • 10

    @ Morné:
    Yes, I saw that.
So I simply ask myself and the Bok coach:
Why would you manage the condition of experienced players so that they are below their best DURING the most important tri nations tournament?

  • 11

Damn… the Conditioning Program is such a senseless and poorly thought through idea…

Bakkies now has to be conditioned in stead of playing after a full 9-week conditioning excercise as a result of his banning…

Bismarck du Plessis has now returned for about a month after a 3 month layoff and conditioning program… he needs more game time…

JP Pietersen was injured for the second half of the Super 14… he needs game time.

Adi farking Jacobs…. I can just shake my head…. throw the tosser in the dust bin and forget about him…. ancient history!

Andries Bekker is currently injured and has been on the mend for 2 months now…. if he is even remotely ready to play before the end of year, then he desperately needs game time….

Juan Smith sat out due to injury and getting to grips with the loss of his father, for 6 weeks or so… came back and was (and is) fresh as a daisy… he needs to play!

Heinrich Brussow has had operation No 2 now, so he is already undergoing rehabilitation and won’t be ready for the End Of Year Tour anyway…. no team or union needed reminding that he is not available for the Currie Cup.

Then what about players who have played themselves silly… like Gurthro Steenkamp… I don’t even see a mention of him to be conditioned… flok my arme hart….

Wynand Olivier and Juan de Jongh have played almost the same amount of rugby already this season… yet Wynand needs to be conditioned and Juan de Jongh not?? Senseless, mindless, stupid!!

Fourie du Preez, of course he needs to be rested, he’s had an operation… and will only be ready for rugby again in 2011……

The players who should have been named to not play Currie Cup rugby, should have been:
    Gurthro Steenkamp
    John Smit
    Jannie du Plessis
    Victor Matfield
    Danie Rossouw
    Schalk Burger
    Pierre Spies
    Morné Steyn
    Jaque Fourie
    Bryan Habana

    That’s it…. no more, no less…

  • 19

“Vodacom Western Province – Schalk Burger, Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Ricky Januarie and Andries Bekker”

WHY OH WHY is Ricky Janawarie still there!!!!…..arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
No amount of re-conditioning can help the bloke. What a waste of space.

I really hope we soon get the old Habana back. He used to privately train under Havelin Hindley to improve his conditioning, rugby related skills, sports psychology, nutrition, visual skills, injury prevention, and theory of the game….he used to be great back then. His spatial awareness was 2nd to none..

Forgot to mention Sherylle Calder…he’s visual skills trainer.

My vraag is derhalwe, is vrugtevolle kommunikasie en samewerking werklik so moeilik?

Bulls, Sharks, Cheetahs, WP all knew which players would be playing CC this year. No surprise.

Bulls do lose more players than any other franchise though. But think they have been working on it with the players they have. They beat a good Sharks side on Saturday. So don’t think they have to worry too much.

What I don’t understand is players that looked well conditioned to me but have not had enough game time.

Bismark, JPP, Beast, Juan and WO. All those players could do with more game time than having to do a conditioning programme. WHY?

I do believe players that have not played for a long time have to do conditioning first then play. Bakkies and Adi could do conditioning then get game time after. BUT players that have only just returned to play and have had conditioning why take them off to be conditioned? Crazy really.

Some need a total rest from rugby even conditioning needs to wait. I would have rested most of the Boks that have played almost non-stop since Feb for a few weeks before sending them off to do conditioning.

Not sure if we will ever learn. They were warned about this by the Prof.

    28@ Puma:
I dreamed last night that I wrote an open letter to SARU, Snorrie and the Bokke.

In this vivid dream I kak on them from a dizzy height, for not putting the National Interest first in the way they are handling this whole conditioning excercise.

It is mindboggeling that they have this BLANKET BAN over the contracted Bokke, where certain players clearly need to play.

It appears SARU bowed to the moans from the Cheetahs and Sharks Union representatives in a Conference call where this was discussed and where the Cheetahs and Sharks moaned about the amount of players the Bulls would be receiving back and available to play. Marinos then supposedly said, OK, a BLANKET BAN it will be…

In so doing the Cheetahs screwed themselves, with both Juan Smith and CJ van der Linde not available and the Sharks screwed themselves too with Bissie and Beast and JP Pietersen suddenly not available.

    It is just so stupid!
