  The Springbok Women’s rugby team will on Friday face the might of New Zealand in their opening Pool A match of the IRB World Cup at Surrey Sports Park in England.
  Kick-off time for the match at the impressive sports facility is at 17h15 (SA time) and the match will be televised live on SuperSport 1 in South Africa.

  The encounter between the three-time and reigning WRWC champions and relative international newcomers South Africa is a classic case of David versus Goliath. However, the South African team has been training extremely hard under coach Denver Wannies and the team has built good momentum thanks to satisfactory results against Scotland and Kazakhstan.

  Wannies is however under no illusion of the huge task facing his team tomorrow on the opening day of the sixth edition of World Cup for women.

  “The Black Ferns have played in four World Cup finals and won three in a row, they are the undisputed number one team in the world and they are oozing with experience and talent. We are under no illusions whatsoever of the huge task awaiting us, however, we will be competitive all the way,” explains Wannies.

  Incredibly, this will be the first women’s meetings between the traditional southern hemisphere rugby rivals. Although the SA Sevens team reached the semi-finals of the inaugural Sevens World Cup for women in Dubai last year, Friday’s clash is without a doubt the SA women’s biggest international Test.

  Captain Mandisa Williams leads a well balanced team and she will be hoping that front row stalwart Cebisa Kula and number eight Namhla Siyolo will help her to lead the forward charge for a good platform so that their speedy backs can test the New Zealand defence.

  South African full-back Francois Steyn is set to play for his club Racing-Metro at Montpellier on Friday in spite of being left out of the Springbok side because of injury.

  Steyn was named in the original 29-man squad for Saturday’s Tri-Nations meeting with New Zealand in Soweto but was cut after injuring his left knee in Racing’s pre-season friendly against Perpignan.

  The news that the 23-year-old will make his first Top 14 appearance of the season rather than helping South Africa get their Tri-Nations campaign back on track is unlikely to go down well with the Bok management.

  Must say this, with mommas like this and the All Blacks already the World no 1 team it is scary when you think at the next few generations. The passing and speed of the Blacks are far superior than the SA team.
