That’s lunch on day 3. It turned out to be a dramatic and a touch ugly. First Benn v Boucher. Lots of glaring, no words exchanged and Taufel spoke to Benn.
A short while later Steyn v Benn: I am cut and pasting what I wrote at the time of the event: ” Oh dear. Controversy: Steyn spat on the ground to the right of Benn’ . Controversial scenes here. It could balloon into something ugly. Benn got close to Steyn and was seen laughing. That seemed to angry Steyn and he spat to the right of Benn.At the ground. Not on Benn but I can’t believe he spat in the first place. Oh what a mess. Benn is enraged, takes a step or two towards Steyn who walks away. The umpires get into act and talk to Benn. Oh dear what has Steyn done here. The provocation seems to be the fact that Benn laughed. Perhaps there is something more in the history between the two, perhaps this was a reaction to the past battles between Benn and South African players. Whatever be the catalyst, it seems to have got to Steyn. Match referee has to surely get into this. He will look at the provocation and the reaction. It will be interesting to see what he will decide.
Surely, Steyn can’t get away with this. Unless of course, the judge decides the provocation was very strong. It’s going to be a very interesting hearing later on.
More reactions: Vernon Gonsalves: “Gotta agree with Shamik… if laughing at a batsman getting out, especially an unsual out where it comes off the pad to clip the stumps, was grounds for retaliatory spitting, no batsman in the game would have saliva left. Steyn’s actions were inexcusable.”
Robert Brown: “provocation, never should come into confrontation, why not just walk away and settle it at the end of the day ,spitting is not the way to go, just made STYNE,just as bad as Benn, like 2 children pull them aside and punish both of them, lets not be weak on this, they are both guilty of decent, end of story.”
Ryan Acton: “Sadly, this is not just going to go away. Dale Steyn has lost his cool in the face of seemingly innocuous provocation and knowing him, he will be hugely disappointed in his reaction. He is a decent, down to earth bloke who doesn’t have a big opinion of himself and rather lets his bowling do the talking. Far more than we can say for Mr Benn who appears to have an attitude problem and should have more respect for himself, his own team/captain and most certainly the opposition! Steyn has let himself down and unfortunately for him, he is about to learn a harsh lesson. But one has a feeling before the day is out, a few West Indian batsmen will learn a lesson. about winding up the number 1 fast bowler in the world.”

Steyn to Chanderpaul, no run, 143.9 kph, Edged but falls short of the slip cordon. Wry smile from Steyn. It was the full delivery outside off stump. Chanderpaul shuffled across and stabbed at it. The edge took the ball briefly in the air but died well short of the cordon
Steyn on a hatrick here. He has switched to round the stumps. Three slips and gully waiting for a mistake from Chanders. There is a short backward square-leg

Steyn to Deonarine, OUT, 138.4 kph, Deonarine has combusted spontaneously immediately on arrival. What a poor shot. It seems to be a pattern with him. Pity. It was a full delivery outside off and Deonarine goes for the square drive away from the body. But they had placed a short cover point exactly for that! Why would you play that shot? What a brain freeze.

Steyn to Richards, OUT, 142.6 kph, There comes the rash shot. Steyn roars. . It was the bouncer that came into Richards who went for the pull but was cramped by the inward movement. He ended up playing a very weak pull. The ball lobbed behind square-leg and Petersen runs back to take it lunging forward. Gayle was constantly talking to Richards through the brief innings but it hasn’t done much
DM Richards c Petersen b Steyn 17 (13b 4×4 0x6) SR: 130.76
Pleased the Dutch won. Hope they make it all the way.

CH Gayle c †Boucher b Steyn 10 (23b 2×4 0x6) SR: 43.47
No 3 for Steyn. What a ripper! It not only kicked up short of length but curved in as well. Gayle was done in by both. He tried to take the bottom-hand of the handle and stabbed out at it. The ball shaped in, kissed the gloves and went to Boucher Roar of Joy from Steyn.
DW Steyn 5-1-23-3

I guess that Brazil wil win the match against Chile….
Brazil and Argentina are both strong contenders for the title, but hell what do I know about soccer!
This will be a cracker
I heard on the radio earlier that SA has had to refuse entry to over 630 possible soccer hooligans during this World Cup… strange culture of soccer hooliganism in the world!
West Indies 231 & 74/5 (29.3 ov)
South Africa 346
West Indies trail by 41 runs with 5 wickets remaining
West Indies 231 & 79/6 (32.6 ov)
Morning ouens, what an incredibly balanced display by Brazil last night. It had everything: from speed and flair, to great defence and organisational structure and sommer alles in between.
But, my heart went out to those Chileans: they only know one style – flat out attack. Gotta love and respect that. I was really rooting for them to get one goal at least.
The WC is definitely more than warming up now.
