Warren Whiteley

Warren Whiteley

Warren Whiteley will be captaining the Emirates Lions for the 3rd consecutive Super Rugby season when he again takes the reigns for 2016.

The experienced Whiteley welcomed the responsibility of the captaincy bestowed upon him. “It is a big honour to again lead the Lions in the Super Rugby competition. I take the task very seriously while I also enjoy making decisions on and off the field.

“While I think nothing has changed it becomes easier. Also because we’ve got such a great core of leaders around me,” Whitely said.

He has represented the Emirates Lions 52 times in Super Rugby.

Coach Johan Ackermann said it was an obvious choice as it builds continuity to have the same captain as the last 2 years.

    Captain fantastic for the Lions!

I really hope for the Lions sake that their good form, which has been building for a couple of years, bears fruit in 2016.

They seem to be the team in SA which most closely represent the blueprint for the rugby I want SA teams to play in future.

Can they kick on though…. that is the question!

I didn’t think JA would choose anybody else. Jaco Kriel would also have been a good choice.
The Lions have a tough draw. Sunwolves first, the 2 NZ sides. If they can come back with 2/3 it will have been a successful tour. That will then set the Lions up for a pretty good season. I see our biggest opposition in our conference will be the Jaguares. Sharks are in a rebuilding phase, and the Kings, well, we know what mess they are in.

With a (hopefully) fit Minnie, Jaco Kriel, Tecklenburg and WW back in the mix, the Lions has the basis for a good loose trio.

I heard though that Warwick lost quite a bit of weight during his stint in Japan.
