As we all know, rugby team allegiances in South Africa are fiercely held and defended: how many Blue Bulls fans, if given the opportunity to earn a lifetime supply of beer simply by wearing a WP jersey to Loftus, would actually do it? We all know there would not be a single streeptrui in the blue mass on Saturday.

But, is there a differential between how well the supporters of the different teams perform in SuperBru? We′ve pulled the data. This table shows the average global leaderboard score at the end of Round 8 for each group of fans. Anyone who has defaulted even once is excluded, and players must have picked in round 8 to have their scores included here.

Pos Fans Avg score
1 Sharks fans 30.65
2 Griquas fans 30.15
3 Boland Cavaliers fans 30.05
4 Blue Bulls fans 29.91
5 Western Province fans 29.65
6 Platinum Leopards fans 29.09
7 Cheetahs fans 28.88
8 Lions fans 28.17

The average overall score at the of Round 8 is 29.65 points.

So what does this data tell us? Remember it′s easy to be on top if your team is doing well, since you won′t have much head v heart trouble when picking your team′s games. The Sharks are doing well, so it′s not surprising that their fans are topping the list. But what about the supporters of WP, the current top team? They′re languishing in 5th place. A psychologist might suggest that WP fans have become so accustomed to their team losing that they often go with head against heart… and the poor Lions fans, well, maybe they′re loyal to the end, always picking their team to win. But forget speculation, let′s look at numbers!

Loyalty and optimism

How loyal are the fans of each team? Here are the percentages for how often fans pick their own team to win a game, crossed with that team′s winning percentage and the differential, which shows how over or under optimistic the team′s fans are!

Pos Fans Pick own team to win Actual team win % Optimism
1 Blue Bulls 91.98% 62.5% +29.48
2 Sharks 94.72% 75.0% +19.72
3 Lions 69.44% 50.0% +19.44
4 Cheetahs 69.05% 50.0% +19.05
5 Western Province 87.65% 75.0% +12.65
6 Boland Cavaliers 23.28% 12.5% +10.78
7 Griquas 70.00% 62.5% +7.50
8 Platinum Leopards 17.24% 12.5% +4.74

For example, the Blue Bulls have won 62.5% of their games this season, but their fans have picked them to win 91.98%: a differential of 29.48, making Bulls fans the most over-optimistic and strongest in self-belief. At the other end of the scale, the Leopards have won 12.5% of their games, with their fans predicting them to win 17.24%: a much more sober differential of 4.74.

We′ll take another look at these numbers towards the end of the season to see how things have changed by then!

    Superbru Janne!

  • 2

  • 3

    @bdb

    Dis die beste!

  • 4

  • 5

    @bdb

    @bdb

  • 10

9@bdb – Sal lekker wees.

  • 13

12 @Ed_the_Lion – dink rugby is meer ‘n mindgame as enigiets anders. Nou speel daardie selfde manne soos kampioene.

  • 15

13@bdb – Dit is baie goed gesê bdb. Ek glo natuurlik in selfvertroue.
Arrogansie is weer ‘n baie lelike houding.

  • 17

15 @Ed_the_Lion – wat dink jy van Carl Lewis in julle span ?

  • 18

17@bdb – Nee wat BDB, ek dink Lennox Lewis is baie beter as Earl Rose. Wat dink jy van hom?

  • 19

Sien net ‘n paar winkels is na hom vernoem,so hy moet iewers bekend wees 😉

  • 20

@bdb – hehehehehe.

I see trees of GREEN, red roses too,
I see them bloom, for me and you.
And I think to myself… what a wonderful world.

I see skies of BLUE, and clouds of white,
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night.
And I think to myself… what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky,
Also the faces of people going by.
I see friends shaking hands, say how do you do?
They’re really saying, I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow,
They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know.
And I think to myself… what a wonderful world.

Yes I think to myself… what a wonderful world.

Another theory for the Bulls and Lions fans is maybe just really thick 😉

  • 24

Now the question of which teams supporters are the most and least arrogant has finally been answered.

The fans themselves gave given the answer unequivocally so the matter can finally be put to rest and the debate is over. Thank goodness
