ScotlandThe Scotland medical team issued the following squad update after Saturday’s 28 / 22 loss to Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Loose-head prop Ryan Grant left the field of play around the 44th minute having sustained an ankle injury in the lead up to Scotland’s second of three tries.

An x-ray after the game showed no fracture, with the results of a detailed scan later this week expected to give greater insight into the extent of his injury.

Tight-head prop Jon Welsh left the match around the 47th minute for a HIA (head injury assessment), which confirmed his concussion. He is now symptom free and has begun the graduated return-to-play protocol.

Hugh Blake dislocated a finger in the Test match but returned to full training yesterday (Monday).

Hooker Fraser Brown has mild hamstring discomfort and will be subject to further management by the medical team.

Consequently, Glasgow Warriors hooker Kevin Bryce has joined the national team this week as a precaution.

5 Responses to Scottish Rugby: A few injury concerns following game against Ireland

Bully, what news of Josh Strauss? Is there a chance he may play for Scotland at the RWC?

I watched a bit of the game. The Scots seemed more that a bit competetive. Or was it an experimantal / lack lustre Irish team / display?

    1 @ Scrumdown:
Hi Scrumdown both teams where experimenting, didn’t see the game but followed on here for a bit and have read the opinions locally and seen a short highlights video of it. What was pleasing for me is the fact that we managed to score 3 tries, and while it is not the end of the world to lose it would have been nice to win (after all these ‘friendlies’ still seem to count towards world ranking points) to give the players a bit more of a confidence boost. Vern Cotter is highly rated as a coach here so much so that he was signed a year before he was even able to start, the players also seem to value his methods, although for me the only thing is that personality wise he seems to be a chip of the old Graham Henry block, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing as Scotland record has not been good for a while so maybe need someone sterner about.

    1 @ Scrumdown:
Regarding Josh Strauss – the general opinion I can glean is that he is pretty much certain of a place in the RWC squad even though he only qualifies to play for Scotland after the first game which is against Japan. He has been training with the squad so must be featuring in Vern Cotter’s plans, I suppose the only concern will be if any of the other loose forwards perform so well in the remainder of the 3 warm up games to overtake Josh in the pecking order, but if that happened then Scotland would be in a great place anyway.
Don’t think it is such a bad thing that he is not going to play Scotland warm up games as he has played tirelessly for Glasgow Warriors in the last two seasons, I think by far the player with the most game time for the them over those seasons. BUT he will need game time as it has been a few months since the PRO12 final last year and as far as I understand the plan is for him to play for Glasgow in their pre-season warmup game on Saturday against Canada in Nova Scotia and possibly also in their first PRO12 game of the new season which will be in Wales the Saturday after (5 Sept). It is a tricky one as he has to try get match fitness going but also really hope that he doesn’t pick up injuries, he plays such an abrasive all action game. Really hoping that we get to see Strauss in the RWC, such a nice guy who fully deserves international honours, we are going to watch Boks v Scotland in Newcastle so it will be lekker bonus to see if Josh and WP Nel are in action for Scotland then. Allan Dell is also in the training squad but I am not sure what the plan is with him, he is already available with heritage but broke his arm so has been out for a long time, he has been training with the Scotland as well and we may see him this weekend debut against Italy. There is a wee injury concern for Jon Welsh with concussion and Ryan Grant an ankle injury, props who played against Ireland, so this could open the door for Dell to play against Italy but his participation at RWC may depend on the whether the injured props recover in time to get fit again for the RWC. I have only seen a little of Dell playing and while I know little about prop play there was just something there that thought he has big potential, not only as a player but also maybe as a leader of the team. Did you see much of Allan Dell when he was still playing in SA, do you rate him?

    @ Scrumdown:
Seems I had it wrong about Allan Dell – he has not been named in a squad of 25 players for Saturday’s game against Italy. However, WP Nel is in the squad and as there are only 3 other props in it I think it is pretty definite he will make his debut for Scotland in the match. Looking at the others in the squad I won’t be surprised if he is the starting front row alongside Edinburgh team mates Dickenson and Ross Ford.
