Francois Steyn, who is also recovering from a long-term injury, was released from the squad with immediate effect following the death of his brother on Monday morning.

“Frans informed me straight after our morning session on Monday and as soon as he heard the sad and tragic news that his brother had passed away,” said Ian Schwartz, Springbok Team Manager.

“We will not take any decisions on his immediate involvement with the squad – his personal situation is now the most important and we will support him and his family wherever we can in this very difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Frans and his entire family in this time of mourning.”

Steyn’s brother Wimpie committed suicide on the family farm in the Bethlehem area on Monday morning, according to reports.

Frans Steyn, although part of the current Springboks squad assembled in Durban for Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash against Argentina, wasn’t scheduled to play any part in the match due to a chest injury.

yeah, that is not an easy thing to deal with. I speak from first hand experience. Frans, we have your back my man. Forget about your rugby for now. Come back stronger and you’ll be one of the great full backs for South Africa. In spite of your recent experiences which few of us probably understood and over which many had jumped to unflattering conclusions.
