The Cell C Sharks’ task of rescuing their Vodacom Super Rugby tour of Australasia from disaster became more difficult on Monday when it was confirmed that Jaco Reinach had flown home after sustaining an arm fracture against the Highlanders last Friday.
Reinach was replaced at halftime in that game in what was explained to the television commentators as a tactical substitution. However, it has been subsequently learned that Reinach broke his arm and is on his way back to South Africa.
The Sharks took 3 scrumhalves on tour, so Director Of Rugby, Gary Gold, is likely to continue with Conrad Hoffmann, who finished the Highlanders game as Reinach’s replacement, with Stefan Ungerer coming into the match day squad to provide cover off the bench.
There has been no official notification from the Sharks headquarters in Durban about who the replacement will be, but according to Durban media sources, hooker Kyle Cooper will be flying out to join the squad ahead of Saturday’s match against the Hurricanes in Wellington.
Phweeeew, playing Hoffmann at scrummie is really, really scaping the botom of the botom of the barrel!!
I see pain a plenty for the Sharks against the Hurricanes on the weekend… they could cop a biggie!
@ grootblousmile:
Dont worry about the Sharks, we just need John Smit to give up his hobbies and life for the sharks, maybe to fly over to NZ to attend practice sessions and look over the coaches shoulders, or maybe he can look at highlights to find whats wrong with the sharks, afterall it is such a sin that he likes to mountain bike, thats where all the Sharks problems started… John Smit and his donnerse bergfiets.
Within 1 year the Sharks suffered ignominy of being the best defensive team in SR to being the worst!
Right there one witnesses the manifestation of the Sharks’ malaise.
All that remains is the diagnosis of the ROOT CAUSE of this malaise … & then the taking of preventative and remedial action.
But waiting for a proper diagnosis, remedy & prevention seems as in vain in approaching round 13 as it was in the aftermath of round 1.
A Hooker replacement for Scrummie?
Makes no sense, must be a mistake or a misleading info?
@ Angostura:
It is also fairly upsetting that the supposed technical advisor takes a subliminal swipe at the Sharks coaching staff regarding the defensive effort after round 9.
@ MacroSssss:
“John Smit and his donnerse bergfiets”. Hahaha.
At least John realised that there are better things in life to do than to worry all day long whether Jannie goes in a mm too low or too high when he scrums š

Yip,’Dr-cum scribe-cum TD’ ‘I failed to focus on defence pre-season’ must’ve have been wrapped on the knuckles over his last WEEKLY article, because he hasn’t written anything for Supersport the past THREE WEEKS…

Makes sense to me:
The Sharks don’t need another mediocre scrumhalf (who, barring further scrummie injuries, probably won’t get any match exposure on tour), but they do need cover at hooker, & especially openside flank, since Marcell is THE player who has already played the most minutes this season, who has put in 110% effort this season, & if he breaks down it will be a disaster since there is no flank cover on tour. Both Bismarck & Kyle can, if required, deputise as openside flank.
Thus expect Kyle Cooper to be a reserve, then to come on as sub with about 20 minutes to go for either Marcell or one of the other loosies, & for either Bismarck or Kyle to be used as hooker & the other as flank.
8 @ Angostura:
Marcel Coetzee is also due a rest game or 2, he was the best SA player in the 2014 SR season so I am sure such a crucial player to the Bok setup will get 3 rest game during the season like Vermeulen… well if the Sharks comply.
@ MacroSssss:
Duane was officially the best SA player in the 2014 SR season.
@ robzim:
Yep the record will show that Duane was the SR players of the year.
So I guess it is just my personal opinion, that the poll was “flawed” by the fact that Duane had a MONSTER international season afterwards that played on peoples minds.

In that case, why not flying another Loosie there?
Coetzee really has been overworked in terms of minutes, tackles, carries etc so he needs a break
Not sure why Cooper didn’t make the initial Tour party? must be a quota related arithmetics?

Must be a quota related arithmatics?
Face palm.

12 @ Hondo:
Quotas are irrelevant to Cooper’s selection:
If Tera Mtembu was fully fit & ready, or Khaya Majola deemed ‘up for it’ at this still early stage of his career, then either of them would’ve been selected for this crunch tour – but that is unfortunately not the case. In the premises, they have obviously not been called up.

Deysel suspended, Kankowski injured, Mtembu injured, Du Preez with Junior Bokke, & Majola deemed not ready.
Lekker man, this brightened my day:
