With the huge number of South African players now applying their trade in the UK, Europe and Japan, the cupboards are looking bare and bleak regarding remaining players in South Africa.

One can very easily select a squad or 3 of players outside SA, who would easily run around either of these 2 sides (or even a combined side between Green and Gold).

    – Fornt rowers & hookers: Definately better SA players overseas, bar maybe Steven Kitshoff

    – Locks: Definately better overseas, at least 4 of them (Eben, Lood, RG Snyman, Franco Mostert)

    – Loosies: Some great loosies in these sides… Duane, Arno, Marco and even the freegin knee-bender (Kolisi) as well as Notshe. Pieter-Steph du Toit overseas though

    – Scrumhalf: Herchel Jantjies is very good, but with Faff de Klerk and a few other overseas, I would call it almost even

    – Flyhalf: Elton & Damian are not bad… but with Handré Pollard overseas and Morné Steyn snubbed, the best SA flyhalves are not here

    – Centres: Frans Steyn & Lukhanyo Am are very good but they can be challenged by a number of those overseas

    – Back 3: Both Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe are better wings than the wings in the 2 teams, Selections not too shabby though… and Gelant is probably now the Bok incumbant at fullback

Here would be my team from overseas players:
15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 André Esterhuizen / Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Jean-Luc du Preez, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 RG Snyman, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Beast Mtawarira

But I suppose our current reality is the reality we live with… as long as when the actual Bokke side is selected that these great overseas players are considered for selection…

Great overseas team, GBS. Today’s match is a clearly just a sideshow. I don’t think England or the All Blacks would be too worried watching these nincompoops at Newlands today. Most of our top talent now play overseas.

Kwas, Apparently RG Snyman, Lood de Jager (he would have been on my overseas bench) and Handré Pollard all have longer term injuries, but even whilst that is the case, one can easily replace them from other overseas players…

Having watched last weekend’s 2 matches (Bulls / Sharks & Stormers / Lions) matches, I still think there is plenty local talent…

I have a problem snubbing players like Morné Steyn, Gio Aplon, Cornal Hendricks and some of the Cheetahs players, yet some really undeserving players like Blose, Manie Libbok and Manuel Rass are picked…

  • 5

Where’s Joseph Dweba for instance, is he overseas?

  • 6

Yes, Dweba is playing overseas now. I believe the Bordeaux Begles in Top14 league.

  • 7

@ grootblousmile: Looks like they didn’t want to invite the older players and opted for younger less talented guys.

  • 8

    6 @ kwas:
    Ah, OK…

Must say that during Lockdown, I went right OFF RUGBY almost completely, opting to rather concentrate on building out my Web Development portfolio as well as my International Web Development plugins where I at least earn some money in US Dollar.

    7 @ kwas:

I hear you, but it was clear that the oldies like Gio Aplon, Morné Steyn and Cornal Hendricks could still dominate last weekend.

To me, you’re only too old if you’re not good enough anymore…

  • 10

@ grootblousmile: Good idea to boost your dollar revenues, GBS. I suspect your rands are devaluing by the minute. I’d keep those dollars offshore!

  • 11

I know, I really know that last weekend alone was too early to judge what was going to happen in future, but I must say the Bulls looked good (even though I’ve never been a Jake White fan).

Sharks looked a bit shcoked against the Bulls run-on side…

Stormers vs Lions game was not as good as the Bulls / Sharks game… it was more rusty, stop-start, tentative and much clearer that it was the first game back after a long layoff.

    10 @ kwas:

I am, all of it too!

  • 13

    Hello all

  • 14

@ grootblousmile: Agreed, teams like the All Blacks will never pick a younger less talented player ahead of an older superstar. You can see that with players like Conrad Smith, Cory Jane and Tony Woodcock who played for the ABs well into rugby retirement age.

    13 @ Bullscot:

Hey Bully… I greeted you on the PRO? Thread as well!

  • 16

    @ grootblousmile:
Hi Gbs are all those players based overseas? Thought Mapimpi and Malherbe were in SA injured. Also thought had heard Kriel was coming back to Bulls but not sure where he is hard to keep up with all the changes.

  • 17

@ grootblousmile: That’s smart, GBS. What is your take on property owners in SA. Time to sell out and move those funds offshore to protect against the impact of further state decay?

  • 18

    @ grootblousmile:
Howzit Gbs sorry ou pel been going between both threads and chatting to my girls. What can I say us blokes can’t multi task too well.

  • 19

@ Bullscot: Apparently Mapimpi joined Johan Ackermann’s NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes on a loan agreement from September to April next year. He’d then rejoin the Sharkies in Durban ahead of the Lions tour. Great timing!

  • 20

    17 @ kwas:

Kwas, my 3 properties in SA are all fully paid for… so I’m a bit stuck with them in this BUYERS MARKET…

But, I’m also now actively working towards letting the current goverment see their rightful demise and actively supporting Community driven safety structures…

We now have to get off our arses and start protecting ourselves and our own property, seeing as the Government won’t do so for us…

  • 21

    Game ON!

    Kick-Off by the Green team!

  • 22

    @ kwas:
Hi Kwas thanks for that info hard to keep track of the players with them playing in so many different parts of the world

  • 23

@ Bullscot: I think Bud Spencer is injured along with Sergeal Petersen and Seabelo Senatla. That’s very unfortunate as those three players would have had a massive impact on today’s game.

  • 24

    23 @ kwas:

    Who is “Bud Spencer”?

I only remember a Spagetti Western actor called Bud Spencer, who teamed up with Terrence Hill in the Trinity movies in the 70’s and 80’s…

  • 25

@ grootblousmile: Community driven safety structures … that is fascinating stuff to be honest. But it makes sense given that local and federal governments have completely abandoned the little guy.

  • 26

@ grootblousmile: Frans Malherbe. He reminds me of old Bud Spencer from my younger days.

  • 27

    25 @ kwas:

Our Community Safety structures in SA are now finally garnering support and traction… of course all done in perfect legal fashion… no funny stuff.

  • 28

Gold team penalty on the Green 10m line…

Missed, just to the right by Damian Willemse.

    @ kwas:
To all the names mentioned you can add Duhan vd Merwe, vd Walt, Oli Kebble and Pierre Schoeman not capped by Scotland yet. Think they could all play at Bok level.
