For the Emirates Lions, this is a massively important game to win, seeing as they are on that proverbial brink of the Play-Off qualification… and taking into account that in the last Round they have by no means an easy game against the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.
Should they win here, they are assured of a Top 8 position and then it will only matter how high up in the Top 8 they can go with next week’s game.
If the Emirates Lions lose this one… and the Cell C Sharks and DHL Stormers both win later today, the Lions will be overtaken and possibly relegated out of the Top 8 and if they then lose next week too, they would fall out of the Top 8 altogether, ending their season.
Considering that the DHL Stormers should easily pick up a bonus point win against the Sunwolves after this game, at DHL Newlands in Cape Town, they will also be eager to see what the Cell C Sharks do late tonight in Buenos Aires against the high-flying Los Jaguares.
But their fate is in their own hands, with a win here… and they will know that!
The Hurricanes are already assured of a Top 8 spot, but that has not made them complacent so far…
The Hurricanes really put the Cell C Sharks to the sword in Durban last week and a win here will push them to up to 48 or 49 Log Points, firmly into 2nd place overall on the Combined Log.
They are unpredictable, will run you ragged and they fronted up extremely well with their forwards against the Sharks last week.
They have vulnerabilities though, and if your forwards can get the upper hand in the set phases and in ground ball situations, you can dominate territory and pin them back, then hit with both your forwards and backs.
Do not kick on the dangerous Hurricanes back 3, they WILL run you ragged on the counter!
Their coach, John Plumtree, knows the South African teams very well, having coached the Sharks Super Rugby side till a few years ago and will have a plan to nullify every Lions strengh and exploit every Lions defensive weakness.
Players out on the field!
Game ON!

Should the Lions manage to win this one, they will be placing a huge marker up for the play-offs…

Shaun Reynolds with a good exit kick from dee in the Lions 22.
Lions certainly looking much, much better than the Sharks did against the Hurricanes.
Kwagga Smith with a massive break… then passes out to touch unfortunately…
Kwagga Smith has done a hammie in the process… and is replaced by Marnus Schoeman.
Looks like a longer term injury, which is bad news for Kwagga’s Springbok chances.
Fantastic touchfinder by TJ Perenara, out 5m out.
Very good touchfinder again by Shaun Reynolds!
Good touchfinder by Jordie Barrett.
Lions take the lineout quickly.
Ben Lam easily tackled out by Ross Cronjé

5m defensive Canes lineout.
Orie penalized for playing the Canes player in the air at the lineout.
