GO EDINBURGH! Really didn’t know which way to pick with some of the games this weekend. Quite tricky with so many of the teams having so many players away on international duty.
Will be interesting to hear how Duhan vd Merwe and Jaco vd Walt get on for Edinburgh making their debut tonight.
Edinburgh have a number of front row players unavailable : their first choice front row is out injured and their 2ndish choice front row are starting for Scotland tomorrow.
Some of the Edinburgh players missing from the team tonight:
Props: Loosehead- Alasdair Dickenson/Allan Dell (both injured)/Darryl Marfo ; Tighthead-WP Nel (injured)/Simon Berghan (Scotland)
Hookers: Ross Ford (injured)/Stuart McInally (Scotland)
Locks:Ben Toolis/Grant Gilchrist (both Scotland)
Loose forwards:Cornel du Preez/Hamish Watson (both Scotland)/Jon Hardie/Jamie Ritchie (not sure, injured or part of Scotland wider squad for backup?)/Ally Miller(not sure, just not selected or injured?)
Halfbacks:Duncan Weir (injured)/Sean Kennedy ((not sure, just not selected or injured?)
Centres: Mark Bennett (injured)/Robbie Fruan (injured)/Phil Burleigh (Scotland)
Back three:Jason Harries (not sure, injured?)/Darcy Graham (Scotland 7s)/Tom Brown((not sure, just not selected or injured?)/Damian Hoyland (not sure, injured or part of Scotland wider squad for backup?)
That’s a lot of players missing for Edinburgh. Cheetahs also have a number of player out, most notably affected at flyhalf where they have 3 players injured: Niel Marais, Ernst Stapelberg and Ryno Eksteen but at least they have their first choice Fred Zeilinga available. Others listed as being injured: Neil Jordaan, Elandre Huggett, Gerhard Olivier, Ruan v Rensberg, Justin Basson and Dennis Visser. Oupa Mohoje and Francois Venter both with the Boks I presume.
The point of listing all these players is to show how much weaker the teams are than they would have been without injuries and the international window, so if the quality of the game is not what one would expect then bare this in mind i.e. almost all of the Edinburgh 23 are not first choice while the Cheetahs have a number of first choice players missing but less than Edinburgh.
Hello all, got to go play taxi driver hopefully will be back to see 2nd half. Enjoy the game.
Players out on the field!
Game ON!
Kick-Off by the Cheetahs!
Edinburgh scrum, middle of the field, just outside the Cheetahs 22.
Forward pass, Cheetahs scrum, just outside their own 22.
Forward pass by Blommetjies to Luther Obi… now we have an Edinburgh scrum just outside the Cheetahs 22.
Lost forward by the Edinburgh No 8, advantage is played.
All play is deep in the Cheetahs half.
Edinburgh penalty, tackle assist did not release…
Very kickable but they kick into the corner.
Cheetahs scrum, 5m from their own line…
Cheetahs scrum penalty, against the Edinburgh loosehead prop… relief for the Cheetahs.
Cheetahs do well, Edinburgh forced to hack out, lineout on the Edinburgh 22.
Edinburgh defence resolute!
Edinburgh lineout penalty… and they can get out of their half.
Edinburgh penalty, 8m or so outside the Cheetahs 22… tackler did not roll enough away.
Shot at goal it is.
Missed!!
22m Drop out by the Cheetahs.
Fantastic grab in the air by Obi, but then he mucks it up on the ground, Edinburgh scrum.
Obi looks like he hurt himself… wrist!
Cheetahs penalty, deep in their own half, good work done by William Small-Smith!
Craig Barry on for Luther Obi… Barry on debut for the Cheetahs.
Cheetahs penalty… shot at goal for Zeilinga… a looong one.
51 or 52m on the angle…
Off the left upright… missed!
Still no score after 24 minutes.
Cheetahs lineout Free Kick… too much movement by Edinburgh and then a baulk by the hooker.
Cheetahs opt to scrum!
Try Craig Barry, Cheetahs!
