GROOT ,
Here the numbers:
When war broke out in Europe in 1914 NZ had a population of appox 1.1 million.
98,000 NZers went to Europe to support the Allied cause. (9% of our entire population).
18,000 died.
41,000 were wounded or returned home for medical reasons.
(That’s 5% of every body that called this place home. And probably around 25% of males of Military Service age). Every Village, every Town, every City, has a memorial to the fallen.
I’m sure the Australian figures are just as grim.
I know there are far worse instances of the effects of War………………….WW2 Poland and Russia, Syria right now. Ruanda, Korea. The list is endless.
So, the Chiefs will win, no more doubt now!

That is very interesting, Cane!
Force penalty, after full time already…. Force kick out but they will have far to go from this lineout…
Chiefs get the ball and Messam kicks out for the win.
Western Force (7) 7 / 16 (7) Chiefs (Final Score)
A few hours rest and relaxation before the next game at 17:15 SA Time…. Vodacom Bulls vs Toyota Cheetahs!
44 @ cane:
Thanks mate, appreciated.
RIP all those who lost their lives while fighting for freedom.
@ cane:
In todays terms, In SA.
That would be something like SA sending 3.6 million troops to some hell hole, when they had no prospect of influencing the outcome.
And over 2 million, either not returning home, or, coming home somewhat less a human being than when they left.
@ BrumbiesBoy:
The waste of war.
Will we ever learn.
With Trump around, it seems……………………………….maybe not.

South African involvement in WW1 was as follows:
Over 146 000 men served in South African units during the war, fighting on three principal fronts. The first engagement was to enter and capture German South-West Africa, a venture that required the raising of an expeditionary force of 67 000 men. An infantry brigade and various other units moved to France, and the wide-ranging conflict in East Africa kept many more men occupied throughout the war. In addition, it is estimated that about 3 000 South Africans joined the Royal Flying Corps. Total South African casualties during the war reached 18 600 with more than 6 600 losing their lives.
At the same time, there was huge strife in South Africa, as MANY of the former Boer Republics people (who had fought against Great Brittain in the 2nd Anglo Boer War up to 1902) entered into Rebellion against British occupation, here on home soil in South Africa…
I suppose the principle reason South Africans do not celebrate or remember it’s war contribution, is due to the division in South Africa and the strong sentiments against contributing towards Great Brittian in the war.
Mind you ………………………………………….don’t get me wrong.
A couple a cruise missiles on the Presidential Palace in Pyongyang (spelling) might be a good thing.

Among the WW2 Commonwealth War Graves in Egypt and Libya, many a Kiwi is buried next to a Saffa.
@ grootblousmile:
Thanks for that Groot.
56 @ cane:
I see on Wikipedia that New Zealand took up to 58% casualties in WW1…. that is incredibly high!
I suppose Great Brittain threw them into all the most dangerous spots… used them as canon fodder, so to speak!
56 @ cane:
Australian figures are even worse than the New Zealand figures!
During WWI 331 781 Australians served overseas. Over 60 000 Australians lost their lives and 137 000 were wounded. As a percentage of forces committed, this equalled a casualty rate of almost 65%, one of the highest casualty rates amongst the British Empire forces!
@ grootblousmile:
To put these figures into a rugby perspective.
5 All Blacks were killed in action in WW1.
