Glasgow Warriors have signed fly-half Brandon Thomson on a short-term deal from the Stormers in South Africa.
He has started training with his new teammates at Scotstoun, after arriving in Glasgow from Cape Town.
The 21-year-old will be at the club for the next two months, with Finn Russell away with Scotland and Peter Horne currently sidelined with an ankle injury.
Thomson has played six times in Super Rugby for the Stormers and has scored 26 points.
He has also represented South Africa U20s at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship and has played for Western Province in the Provincial Cup and Currie Cup.
Brandon Thomson said: “I was over in Zimbabwe playing a warm-up game for the Stormers when I got the call to say I could fly over here and it all happened pretty quickly.
“I came over with the main goal of getting some experience and it’s good to play in a different environment and for a great club.
“I’m structured, physical and I like to run the ball out wide and keep the game loose.
“My father is from Scotland, so it’s nice to be able to come over here to play.”
Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “It’s a bonus for us to be able to bring in someone of Brandon’s quality and potential during a period when we have a number of players away on Test duty.
“He has fitted in really well so far and even training in the snow yesterday didn’t seem to phase him!
“We look forward to seeing how he performs over the next few weeks and we’d like to thank Western Province for their support.”
Warriors fans can get a glimpse of new short term signing Brandon Thomson this weekend as Stirling County travel to Watsonians.
Having arrived from Super Rugby side the Stormers this week, Brandon will get his first taste of the Scottish game alongside Fiji international Nemia Kenatale.
Brandon Thomson Interview
Welcome to Glasgow Brandon. Although going on Friday’s PRO12 result – a home defeat to Scarlets (14/26) we need more than a good flyhalf to help out this 6 Nations. Team just didn’t gel were outplayed upfront outmuscled with stronger carrying by Scarlets and we conceded many turnovers (think 18 was mentioned).
Brandon Thomson’s first game in Scotland (for Stirling County) ended in a narrow defeat 15/12 away to Watsonians. Didn’t see his name on the scoresheet so not sure how much game time he got or if he was doing any place kicking. County were leading 8/12 at one point.
Flyhalf Adam Hastings looks set to be moving from Bath to Glasgow for next season although not yet confirmed by the club. This could signal that Brandon Thomson’s two month deal at Glasgow will be just and not an avenue to a longer deal as I had previously thought msy be possible. So just a nice little money earner for the Stormers and a chance to experience something different for Thomson.
Given the fact Thomson mentioned his father being from Scotland got me thinking, but he is tied internationally to SA having played when did for the U20s.
Brandon Thomson will make his debut for Glasgow Warriors tomorrow at fullback. Peter Horne will be playing at fly half in his first game back since injury and with no fly half cover on the bench I would expect Brandon to shift to fly half at some point in the game. Hope he has a good game. Thought he may have the kicking duties as although Peter Horne can kick at goal he is not a first choice kicker and normally plays at centre, but seen that Henry Pyrgos is at scrumhalf think Pyrgos will kick as he does have ability to kick at goal. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.
