Olympics Rio 2016Great Britain women will face New Zealand in the semi-finals of the Olympic rugby sevens after beating Fiji 26-7 in the last eight at Rio 2016.

GB’s Abbie Brown opened the scoring after just 15 seconds before Fiji’s Litia Naiqato finished off a stunning team move to level.

But Alice Richardson and Joanne Watmore gave Team GB a 19-7 half-time lead, and Brown sealed the win with her second.

Australia and Canada will play in the second semi-final on Monday.

Great Britain earlier beat a strong Canada side 22-0 in their final group game.

And Brown said that Sunday’s improvement came because the team had “settled” after feeling nerves on the first day.

“It is an Olympics, the nerves are going to hit,” she said.

“We have shown everyone today with Canada and Fiji, we have done ourselves justice.”

Britain’s semi-final will get underway at 19:00 BST on Monday, with the final following at 23:00/midnight South African Time.

Australia through to semi-final

Australia have booked their place in the Olympic women’s sevens semi-finals after dispatching Spain in the quarter-finals in Rio.

Recovering from a shock 12-all draw in their last pool game, the Aussie girls triumphed 24-0 in the sudden-death match and yet again they were led by the sizzling Charlotte Caslick.

Against a feisty Spanish side who put the top seeds under plenty of physical pressure, Caslick’s deception and pace saw her score a try in both halves.

Ellia Green recovered from a head knock against America to seal the win with a long-range try on the siren.

The win allowed Australia to put a nervy second day behind them and focus on a semi-final against Canada later on Monday.

After a slow start, Canada came from behind to defeat France 15-5.

In the other semi-final match-up Great Britain will play New Zealand, who were pushed to the final whistle against the USA in the quarter-final.

    @ cane:
Hi cane it’s a pleasure. Watched some of GB against Japan in the earlier rounds and thought it was good running rugby. Was surprised woke up this morning fully expecting to see your girls had won gold and GB bronze but both teams were a player off for part of the game and it just shows how hard it is to compete 6 vs 7 for any length of time.
