Australia’s women beat New Zealand 24-17 to win the first ever Olympic rugby sevens gold medal, after Great Britain lost to Canada in the bronze match.

Favourites Australia outscored the Black Ferns four tries to three, with two of those coming while New Zealand’s Portia Woodman was in the sin bin.

Meanwhile, Britain’s women missed out on Olympic medal as they lost 33-10.

Canada – who lost to GB in the pool game between the two – led throughout in the bronze medal match.

Despite her disappointment, GB captain Emily Scarratt said: “If we’ve inspired any girls to take up rugby, we’ve done our job.”

Britain, who were beaten 25-7 by silver medallists New Zealand in the last four earlier on Monday, trailed 26-5 at half-time, with Canada taking full advantage of Scarratt’s yellow card for a deliberate knock on.

Tries by Jasmine Joyce and Danielle Waterman were little consolation, as third seeds Canada put in a physical performance, dominating at the breakdown.

The men’s sevens competition begins on Tuesday in Rio with Australia against France at 15:00 BST.

GB’s men begin their bid for a medal against Kenya an hour later.

Game more even than the score suggests. Kenya scored early on then put in a good tackle to prevent a try but it was high with the NZ player in the process of ducking down and forward to try score so penalty try to NZ. NZ got a second try with Kenya down to 6.

Was concerned to see Mark Bennett limp off injured in second half of GB win against Japan. Looked to get injured while he was tackling a Japanese player at the time he was scoring a try. A few minutes earlier Bennett saved at least 5 points with very good chasing and tackling to stop what would have been a certain try for Japan in the left corner or maybe even closer had the player been able to get closer to the posts after crossing the line. Hope Bennett is ok and can continue in the Olympics and also not miss any rugby when he is due back at Glasgow.

As for the men’s medals, the last four are SA, Fiji, GB and Japan.

Japan with no NZ in the last 4 should just be the biggest surprise in rugby history.

Blitzbokke were shocking in their pool game against Aus, but at least played far better in the Quarter final.

Seems a strange format where you can play your last pool game and then meet the same opponent in your next game!

Why not just keep to the world 7’s format that works so well?

I guess that between WR and the IOC logic is not the strongest collective characteristic!

Fiji need to win 1 of their last two games to win the first ever Olympic medal for their country.
