suppose it is far easier doing jobs like that when no inwoners around. Area of wood is where there is a lot of traffic so wearing out a bit don’t know what wood it is maybe take a photo and send it to you sometime to see if you can tell. My concern would be using a sander like that for the first time what damage could cause and then can imagine painting/treating after could be a sukkel
