Carlisle United players have offered to help people in their community affected by flooding caused by Storm Desmond.
Tens of thousands of homes across northern England and parts of Scotland are without power after the floods and Cumbria is one of the worst-hit areas.
Carlisle’s players volunteered their services after winning 5 / 0 at Welling on Sunday in the FA Cup 2nd Round.
The club’s home ground, Brunton Park, close to both the rivers Petteril and Eden, has been engulfed by flood water.
The stadium also flooded in November, but on that occasion it was cleared in time for an FA Youth cup match the following day.
Now parts of Cumbria and Lancashire have been hit with more than a month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours.
“Every member of the squad has agreed that they want to help, if at all possible,” Carlisle United said in posts on Twitter and Facebook.
Team captain Danny Grainger added: “Anyone affected by the Cumbria floods and needing help with anything at all please get in touch and some of the squad can come and help.”
Carlisle’s players made a round-trip of more than 600 miles for their FA Cup match at non-league Welling and there name made it to the hat for the 3rd Round draw which took place on Monday. They were drawn as hosts to face Brentford on Saturday 9 January.

Big thumbs up to the Carlisle United players for offering to help the people in their city.
First read about this on Sunday, we don’t often ‘do’ football on here but I thought this was a great one to share here. The damage from this flooding, which hit on Saturday over a large area, is huge and the waters are still going down and many people still without electricity, wish all of those affected all the best.
Carlisle United play in League 2 in English football and Brentford play in the Championship two divisions above Carlisle. Hopefully for Carlisle and their fans they will beat Brenford and draw a big Premiership Club in an away game in one of the next rounds and so get the fantastic experience of playing in one of the bigger stadiums and also earn a big pay day. Think they share some of the gate takings from the FA Cup so an away tie against one of the really big teams could help them a lot.
The numbers show how severe this was – 341.mm of rain was recorded in 24hour period from 6pm on Friday to 6 pm on Saturday at Honniton Pass which is the highest in 24 hours on record in the UK, previous record was 322.6mm at Thirlmere. 405mm was recorded during this weekend at Thirlmere.
@ Bullscot:
Nice article… good to see them supporting their community in such a way.
Hopefully they will beat Brentford and then draw an away game at Anfield for the experience and pay day….. and an easy match for Liverpool 🙂
@ robzim:
Hi robzim, yes I thought it was really good of the people at the club to get involved in helping out in. their community.
I see your Liverpool are away to Exeter in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
