Former Springbok wing James Small says Emirates Lions coach Johan Ackermann deserves to be considered for the Springbok head coaching role.
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) is set for its next General Council meeting on 11 December and it is at this meeting that the fate of under-fire Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer will be decided.
The latest mumblings are that Meyer could be offered a 1-year contract extension, but the possibility of Meyer being axed also exists.
According to recent bookmakers’ odds, former Cell C Sharks coach John Plumtree is the favourite to become the next Springbok coach, with ex-All Blacks, Western Force and Lions coach John Mitchell the 2nd favourite.
But Small, who played 47 Tests for the Springboks between 1992 and 1997, says Ackermann deserves to be considered favourite should Meyer’s contract not be renewed.

I do not think SARU would want to jeopardize the Emirates Lions ahead of Super Rugby in 2016, so I do not think Johan Ackermann would be the right or favoured candidate RIGHT NOW… maybe in a year or 2… yes.
Ackermann is not experienced enough yet.
That said though, if you’re good enough, you’re experienced enough.

It looks like the Springboks will get Allister Coetzee as Springbok coach and that Heyneke Meyer’s tenure won’t be extended on 11 December.
Can’t unfortunately see that Allister will be much better than Heyneke Meyer, if at all.
If hifger duty call then Johan wouldnt say no.
But it would be unfair to the loins, their supporters, himself and to sa rugby in general to throw him in the deep end, short term success will probably come.
