Centre Tim Whitehead has become the 1st player to walk out on the EP Kings after the union’s failure to compensate players.
The 10-day deadline for paying the players’ October salaries expired at midnight on Tuesday without any action from the Kings’ management.
This means that from a legal perspective, the players can cancel existing contracts with the Eastern Province Rugby Union and take up matters elsewhere.
Whitehead on Thursday confirmed that he has decided to leave the Kings.
“You just get to the point when enough is enough and you’ve got to make a difficult decision,” said Whitehead.
Whitehead is unsure of his next destination, but says playing Super Rugby would be “1st prize”.
Other players rumoured to also be leaving the Kings include prop Lizo Gqoboka, wing Luther Obi, loose forward Tim Agaba, prop Tom Botha and wing Sylvian Mahuza.
The paw-paw has now officially started going through the fan…
Dis nou wat gebeur as jy n mamparre in charge sit
Gqoboka kan ma cheetahs toe kom, kwalityd loskop daai
I see Lizo Gqoboka has followed and also walked out.
That new Japanese franchise might buy up these legends of Eastern Province rugby. What a massive scoop that would be for the Japs.
Lizo signed for the Bulls, done deal. Apparently the Bulls are also after Obi, Bholi and Agaba.

Awesome!!
I really rate Tim Agaba and he’s got skills!
Lizo is certainly a good bet going forward, to replace Dean Greyling.
Luther Obi… well he has huge potential but he is a bit of a go-where-the-wind-blows type of player. He was with the Leopards and under less than perfect circumstances dropped them like a pile of shit for the EP Kings… now after a single season he is on his way again. In Afrikaans we say he is a “Trekvoël”.
I know too little about Bholi…
Welcome amigo!
