Nope, not glass half full, or empty for that matter, just being realistic.
I don’t think this current Welsh side will beat either Australia or SA. They played their final when they beat England IMO.
I haven’t forgotten our form this year nor the caliber of opposition we beat in the pool stages.
However, on current form we should be good enough to beat Wales should we face them. Depending on whether the AB’s wake up from their pool stage slumber, I even fancy our chance against them to be honest.
They have 2 games to sort their shit out, and one of those will in all probability be against France in the QF, so if they don’t shape up we might not even meet them.
What a disgraceful article. Well done to the NZ public for their positive comments, the writer however is an arse.

The way I see it, what you call their “pool stage slumber” may be a genuine struggle to get going, but it may also be a rope-a-dope strategy, ala Ali vs Foreman. If they are genuinely struggling, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing for them at this stage. In previous World Cups, they often crushed all the minor opponents in the pool stage, get over-confident, and then collapse. This way, they won’t underestimate their opponents, come the knockout rounds. If it is a rope-a-dope strategy, their opponents may in fact end up underestimating them, for a change. Either way, it is still the only team that I think all the other teams have reason to fear. (Mind you, Australia is a much better team now that they seem to have a decent front row and a solid 10, but I’m not sure how much one can learn from a win against England.)
As for Wales, I hope you’re right, but I suspect the fact that they finally got that win over SA last year might be quite significant, should they meet in the quarter finals… might just have broken a psychological barrier. If they have most of their first choice players available, I think it will be a close call.
@ Vrystaat:
So far none of the smaller Unions who used to cop massive hidings in past WC have had the same happen to them.
There seems to be a distinct upward curve, not saying they threaten the bigger unions, they just don’t exceed those 80-100 plus scores anymore.
Not even NZ can’t afford to give away 19 turnovers when facing any of the teams they will be facing from the QF onwards, they are damn good, even though they are damn good, they will be punished.
I think our current team (due to enforced changes due to injury) is better than the one we had on the EOYT, and we won’t be facing them at the Millenium Stadium.
We have a 10 day turnaround, they have a massive game coming up this weekend.
With England out, all the sides left will be on equal footing regarding no home ground advantage. Crowds will pick their favorites, but it’s not the same.
Even before the WC most of us believed we would make it to the Semi final stage, the embarrassment against Japan notwithstanding.
I still think we will make it to the Semis. Unless Wales beat Australia that is, this current Aussie side will give us nightmares, especially at the breakdown

Would be interested toknow if you see some change in the way Morne animates the game
as we (here) think he improved a bit on this

Morné Steyn’s passing game was good last night, however it must be noted that the USA was already done and dusted and running on fumes, whilst the Springboks were then putting foot down on the pedal and scoring tries left, right and centre.
His kicking to goal was’nt exactly flash.
Meyer comments at the presser after Saturdays game
“When reasonably asked by a South African scribe on Wednesday night whether he had a preference of opponents for the quarter-final – it will be one of Wales or Australia – he said that would be “negative thinking”.
But he then added, to guffaws from many of the journalists present: “The only team I wouldn’t like to play is Japan.”
😆
This song is so good
😆
cracks me up everytime
@ nortie:
Yes, the smaller unions have indeed improved considerably, and it is a good thing. (Much as that loss against Japan hurt from a South African perspective, it was probably one of the best things that could have happened from a global perspective.)
I agree that the current Bok team is better than the EOYT team, and also that the improvements were enforced by injuries rather than planned by Meyer. (Lood should have been a starter all along; same goes for De Allende. FdP is the only oldie who is better than the alternatives, but that probably says more about the dearth of options at 9 than anything else. Weird how a position where the Boks used to be so strong became such a problem. Still sad that Hougaard never became the player I thought he was going to be when he started out.)
Finally, I’m also worried about the current Aus team, but the way I see it, they’ve only started to look really good quite recently, whereas NZ has been excellent year in and year out. The one thing that could sink them is that they have maybe held on to e.g. McCaw and Carter a season or so too long. (Guess you can say that’s one respect in which Hansen & Heyneke are alike: neither know when to put an old horse out to pasture.)
As for battling Aus at the breakdown: I suspect Cheika’s strategy of playing all those fetcher types might backfire… England countered it supremely badly, but it would be interesting to see how the Pocock-Hooper experiment holds up against a smarter team. I’m not sure the Boks are that team, though … you can call them many things, but smart is not one of them;-)
@ Vrystaat:
Tough to compare to the EOYT, as I recall Lood was woeful on the EOYT last year, completely ineffective.
Infact, the knives were out for Meyer for including Lood at all this year.
Hopefully Duane learns how to catch a ball before the quarter finals.
@ MacroPolo:
I’ve got the memory span of a senile goldfish these days, so I went back and checked. If we’re talking specifically about the EOYT game against Wales, Matfield and Etzebeth started that game – Lood was on the bench (http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/rugby-union/30183266). Matfield and Etzebeth also started in the game the Boks lost against Ireland; Lood wasn’t among the replacements (http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/rugby-union/29971638). Maybe a bit harsh to criticize him for games in which he didn’t play?;-) (Mind you, I agree that his form was not particularly impressive a while back, but this year he has been rather good in most of the Bok games he started.)
