Well if there is any players you want in your side under pressure, it is Carter… His line kicks on Saturday were excellent and that drop kick was pure class.

Far as I can tell, good players sometimes turn out to be bad coaches (Martin Johnson comes to mind), and bad players sometimes turn into good coaches (far as I know, Kitch Christie was an average club player). If I had to take a guess about which of the players on your list might turn into a good coach, I’d go for Conrad Smith… he seems to have a very smart rugby brain.

Indeed, achievement as a player is not always a good indicator to use to predict coaching success:
Martin Johnson… world class player and poor coach
Clive Woodword….good international player and great coach
Andre Markgraaff….good provincial player and average coach
Kitch Christie… club player and great coach
Heineken Meyer….useless player and useless coach.

One could add Doc Craven as another obvious counter-example to my claim that good players do not always make for good coaches … difficult to imagine that you’d ever again get anyone who can play in five different positions for the Boks, and then go on to coach them to – inter alia – a 4-0 series whitewash against New Zealand.

As al die emosies nou bietjie bedaar het, is dit tyd vir eerlike besinning.
Feite is, as jy die hele game in sy geheel neem, was daar net 3 dinge wat nie te sleg was nie:
1. Pollard se pale toe skop
2. Die skrums
3. Passie
Maar die res, as mens na statistiek kyk en weer die game kyk, was ons sleg tot pateties.
Lood en JJP se slegte verdediging
Habana se amateur foute
FDP, Pollard en Willie se swak skoppe
Vic en Burger wat sleg knock en Vic se strafskop afstaan
Vier lynstane verloor, die AB geen
Die bal wat (die hele WB reeks) nie verby 12 kanaal gegaan het nie.
Geen afwisseling in wedstrydplan nie, en geen plan b of c nie, die oomblik toe NZ voorkom in 2de helfte, toe is ons manne moedeloos.
Ons het so iets soos 20 tackles gemis, die AB net 3, so waar is die praatjies van ons het goed verdedig ?
HM wat beloof het meer hardlooprugby, maar toe is dit skop skop die hele reeks. Hoekom dan nie vir Morne en Zane of Lambie op heelagter nie ?

Nee wat, ons kan gelukkig wees die NZ span was nie op sy beste nie, en dat dit gereën het, en …. dat AB ons nou al begin jammer kry as ons so sukkel teen hulle, shame.
Ja, voor die AB-Bokke games praat hulle ons lekker op, dat ons hul moeilikste teenstanders is, bla bla bla, maar eintlik weet hul, daar is geen bedreiging meer van ons wedstrydplan nie. Die Aussies het nou amptelik hierdie jaar oorgeneem as die AB se sterkste teenstanders.
Heyneke, jou nou nog baie dankbaar vir skitterende omdraai van die Bulle, om hul die beste provinsie ooit te maak in SA, 2001-2010 (toe Ludeke geploeg het aan die einde met jou kalwers). Niks kan daardie era wegvat nie. Soos ek destyds gesê het, jou kans was tussen 2007-2011, maar dit was toe nie. Ons sal nooit weet wat sou gebeur het as jy toe bok afrigter geword het nie. Maar jou staatmakers van destyds, Bulle en nie-Bulle, was nie meer op hul beste in 2011-2015 nie.
Daarom ou maat, dit is tyd om dit te besef, jy het opreg jou bes probeer, maar dit het nie gewerk nie, feite. Doen die eerbare ding en bedank en gaan aan met die lewe, ons moet maar almal teleurstellinge verwerk in hierdie lewe en aanbeweeg.
O ja, moet assemblief nie terugkom Bulle toe nie, veral nie as jy gaan voortsukkel met daardie wedstrydplan nie, jong Bulle het goed begin onder Nollis, toe gesukkel, maar hopelik kan hul oor ‘n seisoen of 2 die nuwe gameplan hul eie maak !

Yes, he still pitched up at Wilgenhof residence in Stellenbosch (where he used to be “koshuisvader”) once in a while when I lived there, and the man was indeed a character. Long before my time, when he was coaching Maties during the 70s, he apparently once told a player: “Jy kry baie tipe skoppe, my seun: Skepskoppe, doelskoppe en strafskoppe. Maar daai was net ‘n kak skop.” (“You get many kinds of kicks, my boy. Drop kicks, conversion kicks, penalty kicks. But that was just a shitty kick.”) I thought of this on Saturday, when the Bokke could not get their kicking game right 😉
