A DHL Western Province Under 21 player collapsed on the field of play after suffering a cardiac arrest during his team’s ABSA Provincial Under 21 match against the Leopards at DHL Newlands on Saturday.
Rapid response emergency procedures were immediately activated. This resulted in a successful resuscitation on field and the player was subsequently transferred to ICU for further investigations and medical care.
WP Rugby would like to thank the specialist medical team, as well as the ER24 on-duty crew, for their swift actions.
At this stage, the player cannot be named until his family has been informed in full about the incident. We further request that the media respect the player and his family’s privacy during these tough times.
Phweeeew!
Get better soon, son!
Know who the player is, but will respect the fact that his parents must be fully informed first…
Wish the player a speedy recovery. Very young to have something like this. Thumbs up is due it seems to the medical staff who stabilised the man.

Good on you Gbs.
For his sake I hope it’s not “steroid”-related.
@ BrumbiesBoy:
I watched this video the other day where soccer players collapse from various heart conditions.
Usually its a case where sportsmen either hide their health conditions, ignore it, or never knew about it.
I suppose it is safe to name the player now, I believe it is Daniel du Plessis.

Phew, that is young!
Mine was caused by the dreaded cholesterol (and, I think, a mkhulu babelas from the Friday night)!
Was watching Tvl v NTvl on the Saturday with the dreaded Tappe Henning in charge.
Was banging the armchair in frustration & didn’t realise the pain that was going through my left arm all the time, but about 04:00 on the Sunday morning it klapped me!
I guess we were both damn lucky!

Yeah, sounds very familiar.
Will be 20 years on the 16/17th of this month.
