International rugby’s ruling body, World Rugby, are expected to sanction an experiment in Wales that will see 6 points being awarded for tries and 2 points for all kicks…
The sports governing body are constantly reviewing the rules in rugby and looking at ways to improve the game and this experiment is expected to promote scoring tries instead taking kicks for points.
The experiement is expected to go ahead in Wales’ 2nd-tier Premiership which is made up of semi-professional teams and includes some of the biggest clubs in the history of the Welsh game and includes Pontypridd, Llanelli, Cardiff and Newport.
Rugby’s point scoring had been tinkered with throughout history as in 1971 the northern hemisphere increased the points value for a try from 3 to 4 and the rest of the world followed in 1973.
In 1992 the value was again increased to it’s current value of 5 points.
The name “Try” was termed as originally once you had scored a 3 pointer you were awarded the opportunity to “try” to convert the try which was for 4 points.
Under the new experiment 6 points will be awarded for a try and the conversion will remain at 2 points, which makes a converted try worth 8 points. Penalties and Drop Goals will be worth 2 points.
Currently, a try is worth 5 points, a conversion 2 points while penalties and drop-goals are both worth 3 points.

Hey World Rugby & Wales, wake up!
There is already a perfectly working experiment going to tinker with the points structure… and it has run flawlessly for 2 years already… we call it Varsity Cup!
In Varsity Cup a try is still worth 5 points, but the conversion is worth a further 3 points, also bringing the total to 8, whereas Drop Goals and Penalties are only 2 points.
We’ve seen running rugby like you cannot believe!
