- Identity of the Argentinean and Japanese-based sides will be formally unveiled in the coming months.
Super Rugby is set for its most significant evolution yet with 4 new conferences, 3 new teams, 2 new countries and 1 new trophy.
The next chapter of the toughest and most exciting provincial rugby competition on earth begins with a double-header on Friday 26 February as the Highlanders begin their title defence against the Blues in Auckland before the Brumbies host the Hurricanes to cap an enormous opening night involving 3 of last year’s 4 semi-finalists.
Fans don’t have long to wait before the action continues, with the Emirates Lions travelling to Tokyo for a historic afternoon clash at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium – the 1st Super Rugby match to be played in Japan.
The new Argentinean team gets its maiden Super Rugby campaign underway in Bloemfontein against the Toyota Cheetahs while the Port-Elizabeth-based Southern Kings re-enter the competition with a clash against the Cell C Sharks at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The Australasian Group features the Australian and New Zealand Conferences, each comprising their existing 5 teams while the South African Group contains 2 Conferences with the Vodacom Bulls, Toyota Cheetahs, DHL Stormers and the Japanese team on 1 side and the Southern Kings, Emirates Lions, Cell C Sharks and the Argentinean team on the other.
Teams will play 6 matches within their own Conference, 5 against an Australasian Conference, 4 against a South African Conference and will have 2 byes across the 17-week Regular Season.
The Regular Season will be followed by a knockout Super Rugby Finals Series featuring 8 teams; the 4 conference winners plus the 3 next highest-ranked teams from the Australasian Group and the next highest-ranked team from the South African Group.
Conference winners will be seeded 1-4 based upon overall points from the Regular Season and the highest-ranked team will play at home in each match-up.

SANZAR Interim Chief Executive Brendan Morris said, “As we stand eagerly on the cusp of a new era of Super Rugby, fans can look forward to the upcoming season with a great deal of optimism and enthusiasm.
“We are in the envious position to be delivering our great brand of rugby to new cities and international markets, unlocking a host of commercial opportunities and delivering the unbridled excitement of Super Rugby to a legion of new and existing fans.
“As successful as our competition has been in the past, we cannot rest on our laurels. We want to grow our fan base and ensure existing fans stay loving our game. We will be working hard alongside our National Unions, teams, broadcasters and venues to keep finding new and innovative ways to ensure Super Rugby continues to be the best provincial rugby competition in the world both on and off the field.”
On the field, teams will vie for a stunning new trophy.
Meticulously crafted by Blue Sky Design, the chrome and gold plated piece captures the prestige, grandeur and resilience of 1 of the world’s toughest sporting titles. The 360-degree design features 8 blade legs, representing the 8 teams that will qualify for the Finals Series, arranged to provide an iconic representation of a rugby ball and evoke visual nostalgic links to the former trophy, now eternal property of the Highlanders!
The 13.5 kg prize features a flat base which caters for engraving and seamless expansion as more teams etch their name into Super Rugby history as champions of this prestigious competition in the coming years.
The Evolution of Super Rugby at a glance:
- Expansion to 18 teams with the addition of the Southern Kings from South Africa and new teams from Japan and Argentina, which will be unveiled following the Rugby World Cup;
- Australasian Group: Australian Conference (Brumbies, Western Force, Melbourne Rebels, Reds & Waratahs), New Zealand Conference (Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders Highlanders & Hurricanes)
- South African Group: Africa Conference 1 (Vodacom Bulls, Toyota Cheetahs, DHL Stormers, Japanese Team), Africa Conference 2 (Southern Kings, Emirates Lions, Cell C Sharks, Argentinean Team);
- 15 Regular Season games per team (8 home / 7 away or vice-versa over a 2-year cycle);
- 2 Byes per team;
- 135 Regular Season and 7 Finals matches (up from 120 and 5 currently);
- 8-Team knockout Super Rugby Finals Series to be staged over 3 weeks (5 qualifiers from the Australasian Group and 3 from the South African Groups);
- The 4 Conference winners automatically qualify for the Finals Series, along with the next 3 highest-ranked Australasian Group teams and the next highest-ranked South African Groups team.
Strange format…
I am not impressed at all!
1 @ grootblousmile:
Looks like it is going to be a long, drawn out, pile of dried up canine excrement that the supporters will be bored with 25% through.
IMHO I think it’s about time to give this competition the “big sleep”.
I hardly watched any of the last version, and can’t see this reincarnation getting my pulse rate up.
Not a huge fan of the format, but it is inevitable that people will again flock to local derbies and then host medium to poorly attended fixtures vs the Australians… as usual.
I think South Africa should eventually incorporate the Currie Cup in Super Rugby just like NZ and Aus did with the Bledisloe cup.
@ grootblousmile:
You have too many play off games 22-23 July (6) instead of 4.
MacroPolo wrote:
Huge difference between the 2.
It’s not like NZ incorporated the ITM cup or equivalent into the SR.
@ nortie:
Conference Cup=Currie Cup
MacroPolo wrote:
So, you are saying SA must have 8, or more if you include the SWD and Falcons etc, teams in SR?
@ nortie:
Well we had a 6 team currie cup last year that had two divisions… anyway it is just a suggestion. The biggest stumbling block will be the tv rights for the Currie Cup will be diluted if its stacked with another competition which will impact SARU and the unions financially… so on that basis it is unlikely to happen.
6 teams in 2012-2013.
@ MacroPolo:
I can’t see how it can work to be honest, in this current format the SA teams are now split in 2 decisions as well.
Are all the SA teams going to be playing each other both home and away?
How do you also fit in a QF, semi final and final in between the SR games?
MacroPolo wrote:
SARU need to realize that there isn’t a rule cast in stone that CC games MUST be played on a Friday evening or Saturday.
If the two will overlap, why don’t they schedule the CC games on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening for example.
We see how popular the Monday night Varsity Cup is.
That way the matches won’t clash with the SR games over weekends.
They could have even scheduled the CC games on at the moment during the week instead of Saturday 13:00 kick offs as not to clash with WC games
@ nortie:
To follow up from my post above, NZ are playing ITM cup matches on Wednesdays and Thursday already
@ nortie:
Currie Cup used to be decided by a round robin, the South African conferences will be combined in one conference according to the SR rules… like I said, it is only the financial implications, and that is something SARU can’t possibly afford at this stage.
@ nortie:
The Currie Cup will have to adapt from next year as it will run concurrently with Super Rugby, attendance for currie cup is so low, midweek games won’t matter… I think midweek games will definitely happen.
@ nortie:
Our big threat IMO is for rugby in Japan or ‘Merica to really take off in the next three years, whereby SANZAR will become JANZAR and we could find ourselves in geographic/economic/political isolation… that’s scary.
@ MacroPolo:
The SANZAR deals are usually signed for 10 year periods.
I see the Americas are planning a competition as well.
Although many Saffas like to think that we are Gods gift to rugby and anyone will jump at the chance to play with us, the contrary is actually true. The Europeans have no interest in our teams joining them, why should they? What extra do we bring to the table that they already don’t have?
We always like to accuse the Aussies as being whingers, but in the last few years SARU has been the thorn in the side with their insistence of including the Kings, which brought about the change of the tournament as we know it as well.
We all know we don’t have the capacity to field 4 strong teams in any given year, yet we insist on believing that we have so many players that we can compete on equal footing with the Kiwis. Quantity over quality.
@ nortie:
Enter the go north debate hehe
We should go north Becauae of t mhose Damn aussies. The French and English would love to end the two most lucrative competitions in the work just to accommodate us… Uf only SARU had the foresight.
