Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers was a guest speaker at an event where a group of supporters burned a Springbok jersey out of protest last week.
A new organisation, Supporters Against Racist Rugby Associations (Sarra), was officially launched in Mossel Bay last Friday, where the group burned a Springbok rugby jersey.
The group wants to see more players of colour in the Springbok team and feels not enough is being done to speed up the transformation process in South African rugby.
De Villiers, 58, attended the event as guest speaker.
De Villiers, who coached the Springboks between 2008 and 2011, has made headlines over the past few weeks for his scathing criticism of current national coach Heyneke Meyer.
He feels Meyer is not giving enough black players the opportunity to prove their worth and wrote in a column that the current Bok coach “underestimated the intelligence of black people with a dishonest selection”.
He has also said that Meyer has taken South African rugby “into the gutters”.
De Villiers will work as a rugby pundit for the SABC during this year’s Rugby World Cup.
The 2015 Rugby World Cup, to be staged in England and Wales, runs from 18 September until 31 October.

Everyone’s perception and personal bias to MERIT will always differ.
@ BrumbiesBoy:
Yip, a lot of speculation about the origin of PdeV’s alleged sexual antics behind the Spar in Kingwilliamstown etc….at that occassion he(PdeV) stayed over in a guest house in which one of the Watson’s brothers have an interest, Valence I think.
Interesting book, “Politically Incorrect”.
@ Pietman:
…occasion….sorry Puma!
@ grootblousmile:
Those guys can probably be compared with white people who became disillusioned with the new SA.
At first they were optimistic and starry eyed, willing to work together to make things better but as things went “downhill”, according to them, they withdrew their loyalty to the country. Today they can be seen all over the internet just speaking ill about SA.
Likewise, those guys, who probably supported the old SARU, was intent on giving the new rugby dispensation a chance and actively supported it. Probably bought their Bok jerseys, drove down to Cape Town or PE to support the Bokke whenever they played there. But as things went on, they came to realize that not much is changing afa opportunities for players of colour go when it comes to representing the national team. At the same time they saw white players leapfrogging good black players who should be in the team on merit. So, they became disillusioned, and probably a bit angry at the situation, and burn their jersey(s).
93 @ Pietman:
@ MacroPolo:
@96 Ja, hulle was.
@ grootblousmile:
“Any forced plan to include a NUMBER of players based on ANY COLOUR GROUPING…”
Meyer’s “plan” to always include a minimum of 12 white players in the run on team, also falls under this category?
@ Pietman:
Fransie se broer is onlangs oorlede, dink daar is maar baie persoonlikke goed waarmee hy nou moes deel, ek dink hy was uiteindelik huistoe gestuur, dis maar sad, Fransie is n emosionele kerel.
@ MacroPolo:
Was ‘n goeie drie gewees.
Kirchner, JPP (Mvovo), JdV, De Allende, Habana, Morne, FdP.
Retro, ekse.
@ Pietman:
95 @ Nama:
The thing is Nama… the main bain of my objection against this all, is the following:
For as long as there is ANY POLITICAL PRESSURE to apply some unequal rule of thumb that there should be so many of one and so many of another grouping in the mix, it comes down to discrimination.
Whether this engineered discrimination is perpetrated by black on white or by white on black… or by pink on lime green… no matter… it remains wrong!
Apartheid was not right, it was wrong… but this new engineered and contrived “Half-Democracy” is also wrong! BEE is wrong, Affirmative Action is wrong, Quota Systems is wrong… it simply means that some are more equal than others!
Rather address the root causes of the unequal rugby numbers, long term, by providing better facilities to communities who do not have them, level the playing field to one where there is equal opportunity upwards in rugby… and a generation later you won’t have to artificially engineer ANYTING, because the cream of the crop will rise, from and by every spectrum of the rainbow… naturally!
@ Pietman:
You might think HM is a great selector but the majority of the rugby loving folk tend to differ in their opinion.
104 @ Pietman:
@ Nama:
Wat wie gese het, Hoskins? Dit was op TV.
Of praat jy van Cheeky?
@ Jeraldjay:
Ja, ek dink daar sal nog baie gesels word oor hierdie goete…ALWEER

I said ANY plan.. so it includes everybody!
But does Heyneke Meyer have a plan like that or does he just see certain players in a different light, like you and me for instance see Handré Pollard or Jan Serfontein of Siya Kolisi in a different light.
For instance, I did not want Jean de Villiers in the Bok squad anymore, I wanted Lionel Mapoe there… but some will think me farking crazy for not wanting Jean there.
What I am saying is that selection is a subjective choice by a coach… he sees things differently from you or me… or whomever!
108 @ Jeraldjay:
I do not think Heyneke is a great selector, my teams would differ from his teams… that is for sure.

I think we are all in agreement with what you say here.
But can you for a moment understand when people ask, why is it that Habana, JPP and Beast are still the only three players who are considered to be the only merit selections… because that is the perception that is being created. Since 2007, (when JPP and Habana won the RWC), and 2009, (when Beast joined them), have there really not been one single player who could cement a permanent place in the Bok team?
Then also keep in mind that since then up to now, we had players like JJ, Hougie, Pollard, Taute , before them Meisiekind, who were given ample time to prove themselves worthy of Bok selection.
This is all a recipe for a perfect storm and it is the fault of the people in charge. SARU, Bok coaches, provincial coaches and of course government for not providing the facilities. To put the blame solely on one party and absolve the others from any blame, is also wrong.
@ Pietman:
Wat Hoskins gese het op TV.
Ek verbeel my dat PdV ook skryf dat hy by iemand gehoor het dat Hoskins aangese is om dit te se.
@ grootblousmile:
And I agree.
But when things start to develop a pattern, you have to ask yourself some serious questions.
@ Nama:
