The Steval Pumas face an injury crisis ahead of Friday’s Currie Cup Round 3 clash with the Eastern Province Kings in Port Elizabeth.
Pumas physio Luzahn Louw revealed that a number of players are doubtful for this weekend’s match – following their 27 / 44 loss to the Golden Lions this past weekend.
Influential Pumas captain Stefan Watermeyer suffered a thigh strain, but should be fit for Friday’s encounter.
His leadership skills helped them upset the Sharks in Round 1.
If he recovers it will be a great boost for Pumas coach MJ Mentz, who said that they had strong ambitions of competing strongly with the bigger unions.
“We don’t see ourselves as just a team which cannot compete,” Mentz said.
“If the guys just stick to it, we definitely can go a long way in the competition”
Marius Coetzee also has a thigh strain and looks unlikely to feature, though a final decision will be taken on Wednesday.
Ruwellyn Isbell will go for a scan on his back and a final decision will be made when the results are available.
Rudi Mathee may be cleared this week after a shoulder injury.
