    Sorry, WP 76/0

Hope there’s time to put up the 100 points

Well I’m not going to pretend to hide my disappointment. I’m the hell-in with Meyer and his team of so-called professionals. This was a Test they could have/should have won. Easily. But they blew it. Against New Zealand expect a thrashing I’m afraid.

I just think we no longer have the brains to beat these guys. How else can you explain what is going on? We lead a Test for 84 minutes and then……..we lose. Can you see the AB’s doing that?

The Springboks saw victory over the Wallabies slip from their grasp in dramatic fashion in Brisbane on Saturday.

After their experienced starting combination had built up a handy lead, the team that finished the match were left heartbroken as the home side scored 17 unanswered points to snatch a win.

While some players showed their worth under pressure, there were others that were exposed which will give coach Heyneke Meyer some food for thought with the World Cup approaching.

The inability of the players coming off the bench to close the game out will be of some concern, with certain substitutions on either side having a major influence on the momentum of the game.

The Springboks were forced to tackle for the last 20 minutes which put some untested combinations under pressure, and although they were inches away from victory in the end they were not able to hold out.

We rate the South African players:

    15 Willie le Roux
Played a role in both tries and showed his creative value, but his kicking game was not up to scratch and some of the 50/50 balls he threw gave possession away.
    6/10

    14 JP Pietersen
Chased high balls all day and competed fairly well, limited opportunities otherwise but worked hard off the ball.
    6/10

    13 Jesse Kriel
An impressive debut which saw him use his considerable pace in space, and show his finishing skills to take his try.
    7/10

    12 Damian de Allende
Stayed on his feet well and carried the ball in both hands as has become his trademark. Solid on defence but his option-taking was not flawless.
    6/10

    11 Bryan Habana
Made some valuable contributions despite not seeing much of the ball, beating Folau in the air for the first try and setting up Kriel for the second as well as making a vital tackle on Kuridrani.
    7/10

    10 Handré Pollard
A disappointing game which saw him make too many basic errors. Made a crucial turnover and attacked the line well, but his kicking out of hand was not good enough and he missed too many tackles.
    4/10

    9 Ruan Pienaar
His service could have been quicker, but it was a composed performance which saw him take over the captaincy. His tactical kicking was solid with most contested, but also seemed indecisive at times.
    5/10

    8 Schalk Burger
Showed that he can play at the back of the scrum, showed good control, made some big tackles and also rolled back the years by making a turnover.
    8/10

    7 Marcell Coetzee
His World Cup looks to be in doubt due to his kne injury which is a huge blow as he has proven himself to be comfortable on both flanks. Got through plenty of work and got his team on the front foot but still some question marks over his passing.
    7/10

    6 Francois Louw
Delivered another classy performance at the breakdown in an immense defensive display. Went off and got stitched up but that did not slow him down.
    7/10

    5 Victor Matfield
Limped off with a hamstring complaint, which will have the sceptics doubting his ability to front up at the World Cup.
    6/10

    4 Eben Etzebeth
A big game from the big man who had to take on some serious responsibility with Matfield off the park. He was solid in the line-outs, made some big hits and used his power to great effect in scoring his try.
    8/10

    3 Jannie du Plessis
Answered his doubters by delivering a solid scrummaging performance, and even made some tackles as well.
    7/10

    2 Bismarck du Plessis
Made plenty of turnovers and imposed himself physically, but also made some questionable decisions, not least his charged box-kick in the 22.
    7/10

    1 Tendai Mtawarira
Very strong in the scrums and made his presence felt around the park, but also got blown up for collapsing a maul.
    7/10

    Replacements:

16 Adriaan Strauss (On for B. Du Plessis, 49 mins)
Took the ball up well, but missed a few line-outs and got blown up at scrum-time.
    5/10

17 Heinke van der Merwe (On for Mtawarira, 49 mins)
Put under pressure in the scrums and seemed a little off the pace in the tight loose.
    5/10

18 Frans Malherbe (On for J. Du Plessis, 46 mins)
A promising start with a few big scrums, made some important tackles but battled to make the same impact he has had in Super Rugby.
    6/10

19 Lodewyk de Jager (On for Matfield, 18 mins)
Got through a mountain of work, taking the ball up often and tackling tirelessly. One of the bench players to impress as he stepped up under pressure in his first game back from injury.
    7/10

20 Teboho Mohoje (On for Coetzee, 70 mins)
Was not able to impose himself, fell off a few tackles and played more like a lock than a flank.
    5/10

21 Cobus Reinach (On for Pienaar, 68 mins)
Gave away a penalty immediately after coming on and did not add much.
    5/10

22 Pat Lambie (On for Pollard, 68 mins)
Did not do much other than tackle with his team on the back foot.
    6/10

23 Lwazi Mvovo (On for Kriel, 68 mins)
Limited opportunities, not able to get his hands on the ball but ran hard.
    6/10

The Wallabies may have left it late, but they did just enough to secure a tough victory over the Springboks in Brisbane.

The home side scored 17 unanswered points to stage a dramatic comeback which saw them show impressive composure under pressure.

It was a massively experienced Wallabies outfit, and in the end that paid off as they stuck to their guns to snatch victory with the last movement of the match.

There were some outstanding individual performances, but perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the win for coach Michael Cheika will be the way they pulled together with the game in the balance.

    We rate the Australian players:

    15 Israel Folau
Proved again that he is one of the best around under the high ball and looked dangerous when given a bit of space with some neat offloads as well.
    7/10

    14 Adam Ashley-Cooper
Superb performance from the versatile veteran who got involved in midfield for his try and held up well under the high ball.
    8/10

    13 Tevita Kuridrani
Ran hard as ever and also showed that he is more than a battering ram with some nice offloads, but also lost the ball in contact at times.
    7/10

    12 Matt Giteau
Showed that he still has what it takes at Test level, slotted in well as secondary playmaker with his distribution skills making a big difference. Beat tackles and created doubt in the Springbok defensive line as well.
    9/10

    11 Rob Horne
Did not have many opportunities and found himself playing a supporting role but was not shown up in any way.
    6/10

    10 Quade Cooper
Kicked out of hand a lot in an effort to keep the Springboks pegged back. Battled to find a way through with ball in hand and his erratic goalkicking will also be a worry.
    5/10

    9 Will Genia
Not his finest performance on his return to the fold. Provided good service but his hands let him down at times before going off injured at half-time.
    6/10

    8 Scott Higginbotham
Stole a line-out but had an otherwise quiet game before he was yanked off to make way for David Pocock.
    6/10

    7 Michael Hooper
Showed plenty of urgency and gave as good as he got in a huge breakdown battle. Made some big tackles and fully deserved his try.
    8/10

    6 Scott Fardy
He was a banker in the line-outs and put in a big shift on defence. Found some space on the blindside and got his team over the gainline regularly.
    7/10

    5 Rob Simmons
Solid in the line-outs and made his tackles but also lost the ball in contact and battled to make an impact in the tight phases.
    6/10

    4 Will Skelton
Worked hard in his time on the park, tackling hard and making his presence felt, but also gave away a few penalties.
    6/10

    3 Sekope Kepu
Shoved backwards at times, but worked hard in the tight loose and made some telling tackles.
    5/10

    2 Stephen Moore
An industrious performance from the skipper who did not take a backwards step and fronted up well to the Springbok pack.
    7/10

    1 James Slipper
Battled in the scrums, but made something of a comeback when the Springboks made some changes up front.
    6/10

    Replacements:

    16 Tatafu Polota-Nau
    Not used.

17 Scott Sio (On for Slipper, 66 mins)
Very impressive performance in the scrums, and went forward on attack and defence to put some pressure on Slipper’s starting place.
    7/10

18 Greg Holmes (On for Kepu, 47 mins)
Worked hard and made an impact in the tight exchanges.
    7/10

19 James Horwill (On for Skelton, 50 mins)
Injected some urgency and confronted the Springboks up front well.
    6/10

20 David Pocock (On for Higginbotham, 50 mins)
Slotted in well at No.8 and provided plenty of intensity to lift his team when they needed it.
    8/10

21 Nick Phipps (On for Genia, 40 mins)
Provided plenty of niggle, but his service was slow at times and he missed a crucial tackle on
    Kriel for his try.
    5/10

22 Matt Toomua (On for Cooper, 66 mins)
Attacked the line with purpose and controlled matters well as his team pushed for the win.
    7/10

23 Drew Mitchell (On for Horne, 59 mins)
Did not have a lot to do, but looked comfortable on his return to Test rugby.
    6/10

Oz might have played the big points better, but we also don’t seem to learn lessons.

Last year in Aus we also lost in the final minutes after leading comfortably.

We keep subbing our stand out players on the day because of some predetermined plan at terrible times in the context of the game

Bissie coming off was tha bad tactical sub though, who could have predicted Malherbe would have been so poor to come on for Jannie?

A stage victory in the TDF today for Steve Cummings of team MTM Qhubeka … great result on Mandela day for the first African registered team ever to take part in the TdF.

    Groot groot teleurstelling.

Lood het my stil gespeel, skitterende game. So was Eben, die hele lostrio, senterpaar, veral Kriel, baie goed. Habana was solid.

Lambie, Fransie of Kriel.
